Free Daw

Well, Reaper is not really free, but nearly so at $60.00, and you can use it for quite some time (90 days ?) before they prompt you to pay for it ... and even then, you can continue to use it as long as your ok with the nag/reminders. I know this does not get the OP where they want to be (free) but Reaper is really worth it.

good luck!

A follow up question since I'm new to this. Do you have to have a DAW before you'll have any sound from the interface?
If you have bought - or plan to buy - an interface, most of them include some kind of basic free DAW software, such as Ableton Live Lite or Pro Tools First.

Ableton Live lover here, no experience with others. Free version available. Not just for electronic music.
Haha, you’ve reminded me - the mag I freelance for, Computer Music, is currently giving away Ableton Live Lite for free! As I said, I write for them, I’ll delete my post if this is inappropriate.

One plus for Reaper. Cakewalk and all the others are good, it's all up to you to feel out. But Reaper just felt the best and most straightforward to me, though I had some issues trying to use it with my camera but my audio interface is also crap as well... But Repear from me!

It's not free, it's bundled with lots of hardware...interfaces, MIDI keyboards, etc. At one point I had about a half dozen licenses for Live Lite because of gear I had bought.
I talked to them once about being able to ‘convert’ those multiple Live licenses into other benefits somehow, but it didn’t go anywhere…

Cakewalk
It's one of the best DAWs
.

Why is it free?
I don’t know.

+1
IIRC, you need to download the BandLab assistant first, create an account then you'll be able to download the CakeWalk application.
Very easy to use, powerful; if you need any help with it, check the Creative Sauce channel on YouTube. Mike has uploaded videos for beginners up to advanced users ;)
