Free DVD player programs?

Can anyone suggest a free DVD player program? I've tried a few but didn't work.

To be honestly, I don't think there is one. And I read somewhere as to why that is so, but all I could remember is that it's kind of inconvenient if you reformat your computer.

Windows Media Player will play DVD's for you. Theres some complicated/expensive issue with using DVD codecs.

Media Player Classic is my choice. Incredibly light program that also doubles as a RealPlayer (for all those crazies that acually use Real these days). VLC second, BSplayer third.

All of them since 6.4.1 which was the actual first release.
Actually it reads everything and anything.
It has my preference as my main DVD player.

I don't think that's what I was trying to say. I read it on Microsoft's website because I wanted a DVD decoder so I can watch DVDs with my Windows Media Player. Basically it said you would have to buy one because there isn't a really good stand alone one that's free.

I've come across one or two things MPC doesn't play, because they required the Matroska pack (and by extension WMP).

VLC is a good all purpose media player - I'd recommend it.
