Free Octaver / Octave VST Plug-in (OC-2 emulation, plus more features)

Hey everyone,

In an attempt to achieve a better Boss OC-2, I created this VST plug-in.
  • It provides a means to adjust what are typically fixed settings - such as:
    The filter cutoff frequencies for both the input keying (adjusting can improve tracking), and
    The generated octave square waves (make it sound like a pure sin, full-square, or anywhere in between).
  • DC offset switch - to help accurately track rectified or offset signals.
  • Want the "synth mod" sound from your hardware OC-2, but don't want to (or know how to) actually modify the pedal? This plug-in can do it.
  • Choose between additive oscillators or a phase-multiplier for another variation in tone.
  • Oscillators can be dynamically controlled via either a gate or an envelope-follower (both keyed from the input signal).
    The phase-multiplier simply flips the phase of the keying signal, thus retaining the original dynamics.
  • It also lets you tap the audio and view your waveforms at any stage, so you can SEE how it works, and adjust settings accordingly.
While I wouldn't expect this to get as much use as a hardware pedal in gigging or band practice situations, I did try to keep the latency as low as possible. Due to the filtering, it will generate a minimum of about 1,235 samples of delay (28ms or 1/36 of a second at 44.1K), but there is delay compensation for mixdown on hosts that support it.

I've included some presets that run through the capabilities of the plug-in.

I haven't done any public releases before, but I've made some VSTs and tiny .EXEs for personal use and for particular/requested usage by friends, co-workers, etc.
Some of the things I've worked on:

- A compressor plug-in that allows the user to draw the attack and release curves. (Can make the compressor sound aggressive / smooth / tight / soggy / transparent / punchy.) Also has side-chain input, side-band or wide-band operation, key filtering, an FFT to view the key signal, variable degrees of channel linking on the detection circuit, automatic gain compensation, saturation, an output limiter, and key listen functions. (Has some issues on the release code, which I can’t seem to resolve - may be operational order.)

- Another, simpler, compressor plug-in that has most of the same features, but uses standard attack & release curves (non-shapeable), but also provides parallel processing.

- A plug-in that adjusts the time-alignment of frequency bands. (Bass freq’s take longer to develop, causing them to sound as if they happen later than the high-frequency attack of the sound.) This plug-in shifts the time-alignment so your mix sounds punchier, more defined. (But, the only band splitter option I had to work with (not knowing how to code one myself) was uses an IIR filter – causes some phase issues that currently have to be corrected with a follow-up EQ. I now have a linear-phase option, so I may revisit this one.)

- A new - at the time (I started this one 10 years ago) form of Spectrum Analyzer plug-in that takes stereo feeds and views the spectral FFT against the panned location - a "Spectrum Panalyzer", if you will. X-axis is pan, Y-axis is frequency content, and color opacity denotes volume. You can overlay stems/buses (via multiple stereo inputs) and set each as a different color,so you can see how instruments in your mix overlap each other not only in frequency, but also pan placement, for true visual staging. (See what you hear.) I was thinking of patenting this one, but couldn't get a workable prototype finished in time before Roland came out with their R-Mix plug-in, which has the same exact display form, just not multi-track. Ironically, the first public mention/research I did for this idea was on Cakewalk's user forum - Cakewalk was subsequently purchased by Roland years later, then they released the R-Mix following that.

- A plug-in that emulates David Gibson's The Art of Mixing - a very simplified version of my Spectrum Panalyzer - which uses spheres to represent the elements of a mix. I don't think David Gibson ever successfully implemented his idea (or at least didn't release to the public), though I have seen some video of it being proto-typed. The user can place spheres on a 3-dimensional grid to control highpass/lowpass filtering, volume, and reverb level / predelay. (simplistic staging)

- An Elliptical Equalizer plug-in - combines bass frequencies of a stereo feed to mono (selectable frequency, as well as amount of stereo collapse), while leaving freq's above the setting untouched (full stereo). Typically used in vinyl mastering, this also allows bass frequencies to be more efficiently reproduced by using the power from both channels to achieve the same volume as needed by one alone (can then provide extra headroom), and while frequencies are naturally less directional as the freq decreases, the effect can be relatively imperceptible when set right.

- A MIDI program changer .exe to remotely change presets (and name them for reference) on external hardware.

- A SYSEX-based MIDI Program Table editor .exe (again, for an external piece, this time specifically the ART ProGate) that allows you to edit which preset is called up when any particular MIDI patch # is received. You can also save multiple setups for future use.

- A SYSEX-based Patch Namer for my friend’s floor controller pedal - the Roland FC300. (If the user tries to name patches on the pedal itself, you have to go through lots of menus, then scroll through the whole alphabet for each character you want... it takes a looong time.)

- A program to rewrite the names of regions (markers and time sections) in Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge. (This was to automate a time-consuming process that a fellow recording engineer needed to perform for corporate clients on a routine basis.)

- A super-simple scrolling spaceship game that uses collision-detection to win/lose.

I thought you must have done some others, it looks pretty serious and sophisticated, definitely not like "my first VST". I haven't actually tried it yet, but should be able to this weekend.
 
Played with it some this morning. I've never tried the hardware version, so I can't compare the two.

But I did install it and feed a bunch of my samples into it - bass guitars, electric guitar, double bass, cello. In envelope follower mode it's pretty subtle but adds thickness to notes, but I the gate mode is great as a substitute for a simple sine-wave sub bass. It also makes some nasty square waves which sound really great with typically synthy effects - sidechains, trance gates etc. I can see this being very useful for a live band that plays more modern material and wants to make a guitar or bass sound synthetic sometimes.

Tracking is great on guitar without having to adjust the tracking filter, pizz cello seems the hardest. Oddly enough the lowest octave on cello tracks very easily when bowed but not higher notes. Higher bowed notes on DB work better than low ones. Go figure.

Suggestion: saw waves would be great, either a square/saw switch or a knob to morph between the two.

Regarding the envelope follower mode being more "subtle" than the gated mode, the only differences are following the dynamics of the input and the fact that this also tends to lower the osc volume. If you want the dynamics, but not the subtlety, you can compensate for the volume drop by raising the volume of the oscillators (even beyond 100%, as this plug-in uses floating point processing, so you can have "overs" that aren't permanently clipped), as well as adjusting the Mix setting and Output Volume.

As to the sawtooth waveform, it could be done, but would create necessary additional delay (though minor):
In order to create the correct slope, the program would have to wait for a full wavelength of the input's fundamental, then calculate the sawtooth steepness based on that timing. Unfortunately, since the notes you're playing will change, it is not one set delay time, but instead variable, meaning (If I'm not mistaken) that I can't compensate for the delay, allowing the saw osc to line up with the source audio. There would have to be an inherent delay. (But it need not affect the existing square wave shape oscillator.)
If the request is popular, I'll look into it... Maybe even try for a triangle wave option as well.

Would really like to try out this... But I'm on 64 Bit. Any chance you might release a 64 Bit Version?

Regretfully, I don't currently have the ability to export as 64-bit using the software I've created this with. However, the following may get around the issue for you:

If it is the operating system you're talking about being 64-bit, you shouldn't have any problems with this. Just drag the .dll file (and presets) into your VST folder, and if necessary, tell your host to rescan the plug-in database / register the newly added plug-in. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit myself, and everything goes without a hitch.

If it's a 64-bit host program that's giving you problems, you can use a "bridging" plug-in to run 32-bit plugs. For example: jBridge ( for Windows ) | J's stuff
Some hosts even come with their own bridge, like Sonar and its BitBridge. I have not tried this myself, so any feedback would be welcome. Feel free to PM me.
