Hey now! Don't take cheap shots at my "methods." We all do things different ways based on ability and mostly based on what's on hand. :p

Anyways, I'm not going to gouge out my main player, but if I come across another P that I care less about, be ready. I'll actually be testing the 5/8" thickness P's along with rail J pickups in my Carvin.

I have a question...I hope this forum is ok to ask in. If I wanted to replace one of my standard two wire j type pickups with a humbucking four wire pickup, what would the difference be in the soldering? Or better maybe to ask where do the other two wires go?

On a 4 wire humbucker 2 of the wires (usually the start of each coil) go to the ground and hot. The other 2 wires (finish of each coil) are soldered together. As in this link;

All a humbucker is, is 2 single coils in one case.

Good news! I'm at my new place and I had a box of pickups arrive. Glamour shots should be delivered this evening as the sun sets.

Contained was one shorter P weighing in at 11.3k., and two rail J humbuckers. The J neck is 7.5k and bridge 9.2k, although it's been noted that the 7.5k is more of the first test piece as it stands. All of them can be wound to 9.2k(+?). I'll also test the rails against more traditional 4 string and 5 string pole piece pickups also made by John soon.

Test subjects will be 2 Carvin Bolt basses. One B4, a 4 string fretted and one B5F, a fretless 5.

Expect results tomorrow around noon if not tonight. I've got to wait on a cable guy to come and then "celebrate" with a couple of friends a few different things, including my recently becoming single.

I just received my test pickup in the mail yesterday. It's an EMG35 size, which apparently is the same size as a Q-tuner. It's been put into the bridge position of my rick 4005 copy where there used to be a Q-tuner, so it has some big sonic shoes to fill. I'm going to try to get some decent soundclips tonight. :)

I'm going to echo what John said-It was an experiment on my insistence, and although it didn't work out, I'm not going to see it as anything other than just that, an experiment that didn't work. I don't think it should reflect negatively on him. Actually, what I did get from it is a little teaser that makes me thing I'm going to really like what's in store from his stuff.

The tone that I got from it despite a one-string quirk was good. If he didn't like these as much as his standard pole piece pickups, I absolutely can't wait for the other two to come. If this one is anything of a taste of what's to come despite it's issues, I'll probably be ordering another two pickups to match the J4 and 5 I get this next week.

Yes I have, and so far I'm pretty pleased with the results! I'm not much of one to describe sound through words, but I'll try. The highs are pleasant, not shrill but also not dull sounding. The mids are great and the bass is very present. Overall it's a nice and growly bridge pickup that doesn't suffer from sounding thin at all (which can be a problem with how close I put it to my bridge). I'd call it the lovechild of a Q-tuner and Bartolini. :D

My first impression of the ones I had was that they were a bit like a Bartiloni soapbar, which had me uber excited. Definitely had some grunt/growl and a lot more hi-fi in a way than the ceramic J99 singles in my Carvin. Kind of like a firm handshake as opposed to a non-firm one. I don't want to make too many comparisons because these were just experiments, but I'm pumped to try out the standards.

I'll still be doing a full review of the pole pieced pickups in the coming week or so.

The P pickup review should be up by Sunday evening.
