Free Simple recording software for Windows

I have never been able to record to or on my computer. I have read somewhere here how to do that but it never worked for me. Any ideas?

I found a product called Guitar/Keyboard USB Cable made by Lyon (Washburn). It is a 1/4 plug (plugs into your bass) and USB interface (plugs into a USB port on your computer) Its plug and play. It has a soundcard built in 16 bit stereo. No drivers to install for Windows XP. It works with most recording software. It comes with Demo software and Driiver disk. I used Micosoft sound Recorder to test it. Then downloaded Audacity (freeware) with good results. the cable cost about $30.00 from Target (department store). Easiest way to record your bass.

I use Audacity and love it. I used to use WaveLab Lite which came with my sound card but my band uses Audacity and it was so much simplier and easier to use. I use it now for all my recording. I think you can get it at sourceforge.net if I remember correctly.

What if the USB cable is not an option because of time and money?

What's the next best thing!:

Recording direct from 1/4 to sound card

OR

Using computer mic to mic the bass amp?

QUESTION 2:
I am experienced in CoolEdit, Cakewalk and more. Haven't used audacity. Can I reliably record about 2-3 tracks of bass and maybe MIDI?

That depends on what you like the sound of best. I generally get the best results using my amp as a preamp then running from an output to my sound card, but YMMV.

That's my thinking. Turn off the speaker (Eden Nemesis) and run the line out to the soundcard. I downloaded Audacity. Now I just gots to see if recording direct to it and overdubbing will sound passable or sound like ****e.
