Fretless bass.

Some have fretlines to give you an indication as to where the note is.

Some have markings in the same location as a fretted bass, some have markings AT what would be the fret locations, some have lines at the "fret" locations, and any combination of the above can also be seen.

Yup, it can go both ways. I had a Peavey where the dots were in the same position as the dots on a fretted bass. The previous owner had to get rid of those dots and place the dots where the fret should be. Fortunately, most companies offering an unlined fingerboard will place dots where the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9, 12th (etc) positions are.

But I have decided that I am glad that the side dots on my fretlesses are all at the same place as on my fretted. It keeps everything similar. If a fretted has lines they should be where the frets are and I prefer the dots on the side to all be at the same place as on a fretted too.
