Fretless fingerboard woods.

Nope. The acrylized wood, just like any other polymeric composite, will also wear pretty fast. My limited experience put them in the same league as ebony, i.e. slightly better than raw avenbok, which has been my most frequent fingerboard wood. The avenbok is good enough, no tendency of any mark after two years with groundwounds.

Suburban, Suburban, Suburban.......how could you make such a statement with absolutely NO EXPERIENCE with my acrylized boards????????????????????? Limited experience?....how about non-exsistent experience??Shame on you for such an outrageous, unqualified statement!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's unlikely you have..no....you HAVE NEVER held a piece of this wood in hand and have absolutely knowledge of how it wears. Creditability is a tenuous thing and we must be careful making unsubstantiated statements don't you think?

You are also obviously without any experience with the thousands of chemical compositions that make up "acrylic resin" category in genreal which includes, by the way poly carbonate..bullet proof glass.

My limited experience is with polemric stabilized compressed oak. There was a swedish company that did these things, but it seems to have left the market.
It was isodirectioinally compressed in a Quintus press and the polymer was introduced in the press as the pressure was relieved.
The process is fairly similar to yours, but with different pressures, temperatures and probably polymers.

Acrylics are not very good vs. wear, while PUR can be made very wear resistent. Lign used an acrylic, and the wear of the compressed and acrylized oak was pretty much like the old gaboon ebony bord I compared with. Which, I must add, is good!

Hence limited experience. Qualified or not?

My conclusion was that the acrylized wood was very good, but not enough to justify a higher price - if it is more expensive (not really obvious that it has to be).

(I toyed with the thought of a board of compacted acrylized alder. Would be pretty, strong and unique, and with no direct price comparison)
 
Fair reply, Suburban but your limited experience has mislead you into false impressions regarding acrylic chemistry. Think of acrylic monomers as steel alloy configurations. One size does not fit all, sir. While impregnation processes may be similar, comparisons of product results must end there. Are you aware that polyester is an acrylic? Once more, my resin formulation consists of a mix of at least seven resin types (formulated by percent) plus cross linkers plus initiators. You have no way of knowing what these monomers are capable of. I maintain based on my extensive research and actual hands on use while developing the system with resin producers you are not qualified to make such statements purporting to be "fact" and the incorrect essence of your statements proof such.

Hm... When I was trained in materials, "acrylic" meant polyacrylat - only.

If you widen the meaning to poly-whatever;), we have a totally different situation. If you then widne the meaning to "polymeric alloys" (there is a very distinct word for that, too, but I fail to remember it now), then we are in another country, property wise.

I still stand up for that polyacrylics have a, say, mediocre wear resistance, while you can blend "alloys" to extreme results.

May I request a more precise/technical/scientifical use of the words, so I don't get so many chances to make a fool of myself?:bawl: ;)

BTW, I second the Penguins request, Larry. I might have to reconsider, at the end...
