Another vote for GHS Precision Flats.
I love the light set (45-95), which is very comfortable to play on without losing any of the low end goodness. Woody and warm with a clear and focused punch without being too muddy or thuddy.

fretless, flats for fat bass sound?

Another vote for GHS Precision Flats.
I love the light set (45-95), which is very comfortable to play on without losing any of the low end goodness. Woody and warm with a clear and focused punch without being too muddy or thuddy.
I have my '51 reissue strung with GHS Precision Flats. I consider them percussive/thunky with quick decay. Not 'fat'.

I've had or have most of these suggestions on my mostly fretless basses.
Labella tapes on a G&L L2000 (huge),
Labella 1954's on a precision P/Z (big sound, but very responsive)
Ti's on a jazz (nice, but a little thin switched to cobalts, this bass may get tapes ultimately)
D'addario tapes on VM Jazz (loved that setup)
Legends on a 50's P (fretted, but good sound, not too dark)
Dunlop flats on EBMM Sterling MM/Z ( nice warm strings!)
Rotosound 77 jazz flats on vintage icon jazz (too dull, dark. Put old rounds on it and it rocks! Old dead rounds have a second life for vintage tone. Try it)
Labella tapes on Epiphone Zenith. (Massive fretless sound)
I guess I'm a Labella fanboy! Fretted too, but chromes and cobalts are great there as well. I put GHS bright flats on a mustang and they're quite good. It's fun trying all the combinations.
