fretless p/j setup project....

Hey all, I'm more of a browser then anything else on here :hiding: , but I'm starting to get into the world of pickups.

I've been reading the differences between a p and j bass, and decided to just go for best of both worlds, so I wish to have a p/j setup but w/ a fretless model.

My sx jazz has treated me greatly :bassist: and I'm 95% decided on getting the fretless model that has a p/j setup since I've always been interested in fretless.

That one to be exact. :hyper:

In any event, I came across this thread

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=221378&highlight=passive+p/j

and was wondering how those pickups are doing for folks? Specifically the ones on sale... are they "can't hurt, try it out" or not good for the tone I'm looking for? Can they be used in passive applications? If I could have an in-expensive but great sounding bass, I'd be all for it, so I'm trying to check all my options.

What other pickups would be good for a p/j setup? I've read through the sticky's and seem to be more drawn towards the EMG, seymore duncan line of pickups. I'd like the bass to have a fat tone, decent bottom end, but be able to really hear the mids and high's since this'll be my play weird/non-normal funky stuff bass. I'm trying to keep it passive, and know nothing about upgrading pots and stuff... should I do that also if I replace the pickups?

I apologize for the length, but over the past few days (especially the 2+ hours of searching tonight alone) I've given this some thought. Any help is highly appreciated, thanks! :help:

I have posted so many times in that Reverend thread that you probably don't care to hear any more from me. I liked the Reverend Rumblefish P-pickup so much in my fretless P-J that I bought another for a Peavey USA Millenium P-J bass. They are great pickups that sound amazing. I love them in both basses.

Would I need to pick up 2 of 8.7's and 1 j-bass style?

Anymore recommendations are highly welcome!

I put Dimarzio model P and J pu's into my MIM P deluxe. My first thought after hearing it was "this would kill as a fretless!" Tons of bottom and growl. Mucho mids and punch from the J pickup soloed.

cool, I might try that for the J bridge pickup, thanks.

The J bass pickups are the size for the neck pickup in a standard J bass. They won't fit in the bridge position you're thinking of with a P-J configuration.

after a lil' more searchin I came to that conclusion. So far this project is totalling under 200, just depends on what I get for the jazz pickup. Thanks for the help! Hopefully I can get this stuff soon before they run out of the pickups.
