Fretless Stingray Special

After looking for a used fretless stingray for a while, I decided just to order one. A beautiful instrument. I need to tighten up my fretless playing before I take it with a band, but I’m getting there. I went with the SLO special neck which I like quite a bit (I also love the regular stingray neck). Overall I’m pretty pleased with the instrument.


I’ve seen some flamed necks that were real showstoppers, but this one is just ok. The light really has to hit it to see the figuring in the wood. Maybe not worth the extra money, to be honest. The fretboard looks good and the gold color is very pretty. Of course the instrument sounds great. I’m still messing with the setup- balancing mwah and buzz, so if you have any tips, by all means!

More important than the amount of flame in the neck shaft is that from the looks of it, they did a good job selecting the wood for density and they centered the cathedral grain. An all around very nice piece of maple. I would gladly accept less figure if they took care of the other factors as well as that.

6 weeks. 2 months was the estimate for me. I was the 1st to order. I ordered right before it was announced at NAMM.

They got this thing done FAST. Probably 5 weeks. They were conservative on the shipping dates, which is understandable. It was a nice surprise that it got done so quickly.

Looks great. I’ve been off and on for the last 6 or so years with owning a fretless. I’ve found to really excel is just focus on playing it a putting your fretted away for the time being. I’ve had my fretless Ray for a month and a half and have realistically put 100 hours on it. Picked up my fretted Ray for maybe an hour that whole time.

I’ve also learned (as a first timer) an unlined fretless demands A LOT of focus and intent.

yeah it's harder than I thought it would be. I have a lined fretless. I actually took a white colored pencil and made some marks along the top of the board. Game changer for me. I'll erase the marks or wear them off.

Thanks. I've always liked those gold fenders. I was thinking "70's Cadillac" or something. It's a rich pearl color

I bought a roll of pinstriping tape to put on the “lines” on just the side of the neck facing me on my unlined. I’ve yet to put them on.
