Fretless Stingrays

I happened upon one in GC last year and purchased the next day.

You know when your GAS says it's perfectly reasonable to spend months searching for, and thousands of pounds buying, a fretless StingRay because you just learned to play "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel and it has to be just right, despite being aware that there are apparently differing opinions on whether Tony Levin used a StingRay or a Sabre on the original recording? That's where I am right now. :-)

IME/IMO: chasing tones (especially with fretless) is a 'straw man'. has anyone ever heard a "bad fretless tone" --- or was it just a tone that you didn't prefer...on that tune...at that moment...because you're too picky...and because you weren't the player who was getting all the love? :D

also: who can't change-up their tone? ;)

I have been on the hunt for a 4 string fretless Stingray for about a year now ...

Are you interested in lined or unlined, or doesn't it matter? My previous unlined StingRay 4 fretless is for sale at the shop where I traded it in. It's no longer my bass - i.e., it's not a consignment - so I have no financial interest in giving you a heads up about this instrument. 3TB or tobacco burst .. tbh, I forget which.

Can’t you find a dealer that will do a special order? Or, are those days long gone??

Long gone, it seems. There are no factory options other than colour - and the body colour dictates the fingerboard material (one of Maple, Rosewood or Ebony) and hardware colour (one of Black, Chrome or Gold) combination. The only configurable option is H or HH.

...
...You can get a fretless neck from Status graphite for about 500 usd shipped.
...

This is probably the best option right now, but, @Bassis78, just be aware that there is currently no Status Graphite option for the 22-fret StingRay Special - only the original 21-fret design will take a Status Graphite neck, for the time beign at least.

I would contact the folks at Bass Central. While I’ve never ordered directly from them, I bet that if anyone could do it, it would be them.

If they have a website, I'd venture a look-see!
