Plus you can always swap out to an unlined mighty mite neck in the future.

Oh of course not! On any 'big ticket item' as this is, I normally go in half way.
Also, just making sure we are on the same page here, this would be a Christmas gift. I would never have my parents just buy gear for me

Hard to find lower priced unlined fretless instruments...

Squire Vintage Modified Jazz Fretless is the best bang for the buck IMHO... I had one to play with... Lotta fun...
