Well, that's it right there. If the OP had asked for examples of fretless work to showcase what's so good about it, then we'd have something to help him with. But if the OP has heard fretless and is asking the question anyway, then this answer is it. Sorta like asking "what's so great about slide guitar?"

Seriously:
For me what's good about fretless basses (one of some other reasons) is: The look.

I love to see fretless basses. Esp. The unlined maple fretboard Fender Precision fretless. I can stare at their pictures again and again.
Too bad I don't own/play fretless. But someday I'd like to.

Just my two cents :)
