So yesterday I was forced to sell my beloved Rickenbacker. Broke, bad economy, didn't have the rent, Christmas coming up etc etc. I got it this summer, was able to play it for 6 months and made a healthy profit on it. Sounds good right? Well now I am left with my old Ibanez SG SR300DX and I frickin hate the tone now. Just could not get anything good out of it after having that Rick! Am I suprised, no, but damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Probably never find another at 1/3 of its value either. Now if I could only find that kind of deal on a Stingray! Lol! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!! Guess I have to lose my Rick club number. Cool factor just decreased 10 fold!

Just caught this as I scanned the thread titiles. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. My condolences. I am goin thru the same thing here in SC, havin to let go of some really sentimental things to make ends meet as jobs and gigs thin to nuttin. But, your cool factor actually jumped. Someone who realizes what their priorities are and takes steps to take care of them is someone I admire and respect. There IS always another bass, never another life. AM sorry for your loss, but things will turn around. And if the guys in your Ric club let ya go over this, well, you and I will start another, the Previous owners of Great Gear Club. Heh. Sorry man, just lettin ya know you ain't alone.

It's just stuff.

I just posted 4 of my basses in the "never sell" thread. The $6000-8000 total these basses are worth would go towards groceries, car payments and my mortgage in a second if it came to that.

Be happy that RICs are readily available. When you are in a better financial spot, there will be tons of them available for you to choose from.

Sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Life could be worse than "having to sell a Rickenbacker". Yeah, it sucks...I've done it more than I care to recall...but things like eating, having a roof over your head, and taking care of your family are FAR more important. A Rickenbacker (or any bass) is just "wood and wires".

Profile says you have a 1991 Peavey Foundation V... you still have that? I'd play that before the SG Ibanez.

That sucks, man. I'm going through some hard times myself. I hope I won't have to sell my equipment to make it. Fortunately, I don't have any children or an old lady to worry about. I can live easily off of beans and rice and sammiches. I've done it before and I'm doing it again, apparently...

I think its admirable that you sold your favorite bass to pay the rent.

Your a good man, you know whats important.

One thing I've learned in life is that things eventually have a funny way of working out. Keep your head up and move on, thngs will get better.

Sorry to hear about the RIC. Last Christmas I sold my main axe to fund a gift for my wife. It was hard in the moment, and I still miss the instrument, but the look on wifey's face Xmas morning certainly helped to assuage my feelings of loss.

Sympathy. I recall hard times in the past when I had my Rick 12 string at the pawn shop for months and I once sold a beautiful 330 with a Bigsby to make the rent. Short money, too. The guy could see I was in bad shape and really screwed me.

Times will get better, you'll make it through and you'll have another Rickenbacker someday. Everybody goes through tough times. You will really relish the day you can walk into a shop, fall in love with a bass and buy it on the spot and think back on the lean times.

I made this very same sacrifice years ago in college. Tough times my friend and I feel your pain. I too sold my beloved Ric to pay the rent. I had tears when I did it for what that bass represented to me at the time.
However, there will always be Ric's to buy. Having a hobby such as this is a lot more fun when you can afford it, trust me.

Props to you for sucking it up and dealing with the present. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Living in the present is the only choice. On the upside, (as my Irish brethren would say) you woke up on the right side of the grass this morning, you are vertical and taking nourishment. Most importantly, you are not on the curb holding your last and only cherished possession in your clenched fist. You can still make music, and this will make your music better. Peace.

Why not save up a couple hundred bucks, do a pickup/preamp upgrade, and have it professionally setup? You'd be surprised how good any bass can sound with good electronics.

I know it wont sound exactly like your Rick, but there is a wealth of knowledge on here, so the guys in P&E could probably help you emulate that tone for cheap.

Props to you, sir, for taking the noble road and not unnecessarily resorting to unemployment and welfare. I too am being forced to sell off some of my gear to make a tuition payment for the Spring. I may be picking up a second job too, just to get an emergency savings fund going.

Many years ago when in NYC i did the same thing,...but to a Musicman Stingray that i bought new in 1977..
I sold it for $300! But then i needed the money.. I sold it to a friend that owned a studio... Years later around 1989 i was on tour and wound up in LA.. I was at the guitar stores shopping and saw that the 70s stingrays were fetching some good money and thought back about my old stingray..
A few days later i was home in NYC and called my friend to see if he still had the bass.. He said he did... I asked if he ever thought about selling it.. He said no, but if i wanted i could buy it back since it has just been in the case in his studio... Currently he has a huge vintage guitar collection that rivals other huge collections..
Anyway , i asked him what he wanted for it and i was prepared to drop what i needed to get it back...
He said what he paid me for it! So i went over with $300 in hand and got it back.. Still have it today.... Now that was a good friend.... and i was lucky... but you just never know how things will work out years down the road.. Just had to share that with you.

An old 80s Rick is real nice but when you are able you will be able to find another eventually...

Wow you guys sure rock. What a heartwarming and kind response from all of you.

Yes I still have the Peavey and it has an amazing tone. It worked months ago when I placed it the case, now it has no output. Guess I will be looking into it now. When I first got it it had a bad pick up so I got one (Super Ferrite) and it all worked fine for months. Then when I took out out of the case, nada. All connections look good. Only faint scratching when I turn the tone pot. Clues?

It was either this or raid the kids Disney World fund so I couldn't do that! What kills me is I got it for $500 mint condition. Likely to never see that again! Thanks all, I have done nothing special, just what a man should do. And yes, totally grateful to have other basses. But that tone......................................:(
