From poly to nitro...

Polyester never ages. It is the Dick Clark of instrument finishes.

Poly indeed ages and weather checks...but it's a bit different than how nitro does. If you love the way a thin nitro finish wears...you probably need nitro to do it.

If that is all you want, you can just satin the finish with some elbow grease and sand paper. Getting nitro-like wear isn't easy to do on a poly job.
Yeah...it would. I’m lazy, want to keep it intact and dull it a bit. The results don’t have to be nice and day..but just better.
I think even if you use a 2K grit sandpaper it will be cloudy. Then if you polish the cloudiness away it will have that poly shine again.
I am by no means against artificially aging the appearance of a bass. I've done it myself. I have also bought a relic'd bass. I agree with others that, if you just want to take the shine off, a gentle sanding (or wet sanding) is probably the way to go.

To make it look “real”, I would strap some sand paper to your right forearm and left palm, and just play for a few hours...

I took an abrasive dish sponge (the green and yellow ones) and used the green side to dull the finish on a couple basses. worked well, but both were nitro
i started with steel wool ... = even #0000 seemed pretty scratched looks ...
then started trying a variety of wet sanding ... ( on a brand new poly body )
like others have said , then things start to get to cloudy ... then trying to find a happy medium between cloudy and once again toooooo polished is a challenge ...
done this on a couple bodies ... a sunburst & black ... sunburst was more forgiving and ended up a bit more relic'd ...
but ... i would remove everything from the body ,... or the attempt will look very obvious ..

How does one get rid of the glossy shine on satin poly finish? I have two basses with this issue and I’ve been meaning to ask!
