Frustrated

I had exactly one for the first 20 years I played, really only went to others when I switched to 5 string. I still have it, since 1969. But there are so many choices out there now compared to when I started, I can see the temptation to always be checking out other tools. I'm in the process of putting together a new gigging amp, my first one since 1987, I'm seeing things have changed a little bit since then:thumbsup: Jim

Number five for me was the 5 string that gets all the play time. Been tempted by a fretless and some others, but never bit. :)

Figure out which bass has the lowest amount of gain.

Plug in the next bass and adjust its volume control until it has the same amount of gain. Measure the resistance of the pot at that volume. Solder in a resistor of that value in line with the volume control. At full volume these two basses now have the same amount of gain.

Of course this is a fair bit more difficult than adjusting the gain control of your amp.

I love how nobody can ask anything anymore without somone getting snarky about it.:rollno:

Theres a right way to start a thread... a proper title & some proper searching to be informed in the subject matter.

So...

Title: Recommendations for a simple amp

Body: I've hit up Musiciansfriend & looked at a bunch of amps. I see model X is kind of what I'm looking for but I'd like some recommendations of other stuff I could be missing.

See how simple it is? But Talkbass has gotten too far away from that lately with weird rants & unfair posts. To the OPs credit hes been really good about following up & clarifying what hes looking for... he just needed to get that off his chest. A better title would have clearly helped

I happen to like the contour switch it smooths out the sound to me anyways...
It's there for a reason.
Never did I say it was not useful; only that it is an unnecessary complication _for me_.
I'm glad it is useful for you.
There's a similar control on my VMTD, and I tinker with it occasionally, but mostly, it does not factor into 'my sound.'
Not saying it won't, or it can't, but for me and the sound I'm looking for right now, hasn't played a part. Tomorrow is another day.

And what's wrong with that? I don't see any title being any better. He's frustrated, so he named it that, what's wrong with that? And searching some online site is hardly as useful as first hand experience. So he asked, big deal.

-sometimes I wish my amp had several presets, because I have so many basses that I have time to forget what I used for the settings last time I played it through a particular amp.
to me that means you don't remember what a particular bass sounds like, in which case why are you grabbing it?

i do the switching thing with two guitars, a les paul and a tele; they don't sound the same, but i've tweaked pickups and wiring until they were about the same loudness.

point being, i deliberately pick up one or the other because of how it sounds, to fit the song i'm playing. i know what to expect when i grab it. if i couldn't remember what they brought to the table sound-wise, why would i own them?

That's is odd... And gk is like the golden boy of solid state amps. But hey, i don't see anything wrong with it.

Sponsorship or endorsement implies, very heavily, that a relationship exists between an individual and a manufacturer. Maybe not with an owner, but at the very least an artist relations rep or people that can address concerns like this. Why not just call them instead of going to an online forum?

It's not like anybody on TB is dishonest or intentionally misleading about their endorsements or sponsorships....:D

When you get right down to it. If you spend that long "finding your sound" after changing the instrument that starts the voicing in the first place, maybe you need to stop throwing your sound away?

Or maybe just get basses that sound how he wants in the first place instead of spending a ton of money on a bunch of different expensive basses that he then can't seem to get what he wants from.

But my guess would be the cab is a big part of the issue, although he didn't say what he had before that. If you're lost tone-wise, it's best to move back to a simplified setup, and then figure out what it is you're missing. The GK is good for that already, I'd say it's a pretty "blank slate". See if you can get whatever the most neutral GK cab is in the 2x12-4x10 size range.

But you need to have some specific tonal goals otherwise you'll never know if you've reached them.

Yeah I agree. Maybe he's just tired of fiddling with the controls to get a good sound, I can understand that, I'm going to get a gk though, I love the high fi controls and the sounds they can make, and I dont need a tube head yet, I still drive to gigs and load the gear myself :)
