Frustration on my JERZY DROZD build. Please help me.

Not sure what Blu thought about your post, but I found your posting slightly snarky, which, regardless of the content of your argument, is probably what led to the Ignore. Just my perception of the situation.

I didn't intend for it to be snarky. I thought the post I was replying to was kind of insulting to the people who have defended Jerzy Drozd ( and if you dish it out you should be able to take it), and a little angry for a guy that isn't even buying a bass from him. So I just wanted to point out, rightly so IMO, that there are other options for people that don't like his customer service. Jerzy has more customers than he can handle obviously, so there is no need for him to improve his communication to get more business. It is his right to run his business as he sees fit, and people that don't like the lack of communication have many other options to choose from, hence the "free market" I talked about.

I don't really care about him ignoring me, it just seems odd that I have been here for 15 years (and on other forums too) and have never once had someone put me on ignore before. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I dig what you're saying. I just think that how you phrased it could have been interpreted as being snarky.

With that said, I do agree generally that people here do often excuse bad behavior from gear manufacturers with less than kind bedside manner. I don't think Jerzy Drozd necessarily rises to anywhere of that level, but some of these gear manufacturers are downright douche bags. I don't buy that creative genius thing. For instance, I have a friend who was cussed out on the phone by the owner of a boutique cabinet manufacturer when he called to inquire about putting casters on one of his cabinets. Screw that noise.

OK, JD has reestablished communication with OP and OP is choosing the top from samples, can we get over the more useless and unconstructive aspects of this discussion, please? Time to move on.
But... there's still some rope left... and the hanging tree... and half the mob hasn't even shown up yet!

OP, I'm glad that JD had gotten back to you. Hang tight, the wait will be worth it.

to imply

Hi Jason. Oh yes. I did not mean to imply that Fodera doesn't do those things also... they do, and do them very well. I was only pointing out the difference that Fodera has a team of craftsmen, working together, to create their instruments... in contrast to, in this situation, a lone builder who is doing those things all by his lonesome, and that it obviously requires extra time to complete an instrument.

Got it! Thanks.

To add more data to this discussion:

My first custom bass builder quoted me 8 months. They took 23 months (pickups took the longest time, really). After the deadline lapsed, I started emailing every month or so. Communication was poor and half my emails were not answered, but in the end I got a really nice bass.

My second custom bass builder quoted me 6 months. They took 12 months. Every email was replied to immediately (usually within 1 business day, have had replies in as little as 10 minutes). Also was a really nice bass (too bad it was damaged almost irreparably in shipping).

Lessons I learnt are: (1) Unless you've gotten someone really shady, your bass is going to get built; (2) emailing/calling them isn't going to make it go any faster, but the contrary is probably true; (3) estimates are ALWAYS going to be "best case scenario"; and (4) don't let the customer service or lack thereof stand in the way of enjoying a good bass. After all, you're going to be using the bass for many times longer than you are interacting with the builder.

Update

Hello there,

I did order also a Barcelona 30 Anniversary in November/Dezember. They wanted to start in January (thats what they wrote me), but unafortunately they started in March because they had many orders from the past year before ours came in. It is normal to wait a year for a custom build, but i think that to establish a better communication, you should talk to Sirgado, who is leading the customer-care relations. It is, of course, not nice to have a "one-way-communication", but we have to understand that we are not the only ones. They make very demanded basses, and at a incredible price for such a custom piece of art. If I where you, I would send Sirgado a mail with the specs that you wanted, telling also the circumstances and send an apology to Lorenna.
I did send them a mail this very last week to ask how the work is going on. Last time that I asked for a estimated duration of the bass building process, they could not give me an exact answer, because thats impossible with such intruments done with so much care and love for detail

cheers,
Timpano

It is possible to like and enjoy a product, and still have sense enough to recognise a business model with flaws and hold the owner accountable. Liking a product is not reason enough to minimise others comments and complaints.

Just as it's a free market, it's also free to post our opinions to talkbass. Don't like it? Don't respond, better yet, utilize the ignore feature as I've done with you. Problem solved.

Well, since you’re the type to block someone over a small, simple disagreement, I guess I’ll go ahead and block you, too. Wouldn’t want to do business or otherwise associate myself with someone like you.
