Yeah I know they were originally a factory in Japan, but for all I know Fujigen is now a brand name for assorted all world things.

Their brand better sell - no OEM is going to buy from them now since they are a competitor.

Cort and Samick both seem to do this without a problem, as has been previously mentioned.

From the FGN Guitars website:

FUJIGEN has now 3 factories in 3 locations: The head factory in Matsumoto City, the Omachi factory in Matsumoto surrounding area and the Hirooka factory in Shiojiri City. At the Omachi factory, timber is seasoned by our proprietary drying system. Top conditioned wood gets accurately shaped by 5 axis CNC-routers for guitar bodies and necks. In both the head factory in Matsumoto and in the Hirooka factory, products are coated, assembled and finished.　

Besides these factories, we have affiliate companies such as the Ohotsk Public Wood Craft Promotion Ltd. in the booth of Hokkaido, who cooperate with us in the processing of wood and coating facilities.

Sounds like Fujigen has only ever manufactured in Japan. This is really exciting. I wonder where they will sell their instruments?

For me, they're different looking enough for me not to consider it a direct clone.

Also, they used to manufacture Fender's MIJ instruments for a good 15 years or so. I owned one - a Fender MB-5. Many people here own Fujigen-produced Fenders, and some swear that they are better than MIA.

They also made a lotta Ibanezeses in the older days, of which I currently own (an Ibanez Destroyer DT-650 from 1983).

Also, Fujigen had FGN brand for a few years already, apparently. They were just never exported to the US.

Saw the Menzingers open for Hot Water Music on Saturday. The bass player had an FGN jazz, looked and sounded great. I think the guitar player had one of their lefty strats also.

Yep, Mr. Fry seems to speak for me here as well.

I have 4 basses at the moment, all MIJ and all from 85 or earlier. Pretty sure at least 2, and possibly all 4 are Fujigen.

I'd definitely consider one of these as likely equal to, and perhaps better made, than Fender's current similarly prices offerings.

I don't think the timing of this is coincidental. fender is transitioning a lot of the manufacturing away from Japan. people perceive the Japanese stuff to be very high quality, so I just think FGN is striking while the time is perfect.

I never understand why manufacturers are so obsessed with copying Fender designs.

Sure Fender is the benchmark in basses in terms of units sold, but surely you can come up with something more original than a revised scratchplate and headstock.

I would never ever buy something that would constantly remind me that it's a copy.

I should add IMHO, just in case I've upset anyone!
