Double Bass Funk groove for double bass

Hello All,
Well, it's all in the title; I am looking for material, preferably videos where I could hear and see, and from which I could extract the substantive marrow.

Not sure if you want instructional videos or just some playing examples, but Soul Coughing's bassist is the first thing that came to mind for me.

Was trying to think of a couple more; Christian McBride can certainly get funky on some tunes.


Edgar Meyer can also throw in some funk here and there; in some of the least likely situations too!

Bridget Kearny from Lake Street Dive gets pretty funky on her upright

Chris Woods also can create some insanely funky bass lines.
Listen to Medeski Martin and Wood (Combustication or Shackman are the first two albums that come to mind)- also any Woods Brothers album has him playing fairly funky bass lines.


Old school hip hop, particularly A Tribe Called Quest, feature upright bass lines that could be considered funky.

Great thread! If you were looking for educational stuff, you might want to watch Chris Minh Doky dealing with this issue:


He talks mostly about choice of notes, or (better said) choice of beats to be played to sound funky.

As for double bass technique, I think the prerequisite is to be able to play very short notes and make them sound authoritatively enough; this must be done without your right hand falling off your body. Few ideas can perhaps be exctracted from this thread.

Lot of bands play Daft Punk: Get Lucky, so you might try that. I'm dealing with it too, it's a good lesson in endurance. (And the song is great, as it might not seem at first.)

Soul Coughing's bassist is the first thing that came to mind for me.

^^^This. Sebastian's playing w/ Soul Coughing may not quite be archetypal "funk" but it was so conspicuously funky in a way that way too many electric bassists weren't that it really stood out at the time as being infectious and compelling. And it still holds up as fresh 25-some-odd years later.

I saw these guys live around 2012. The second half of the show (or maybe the encore) the bass player switched to a P bass (I think), they did a cover of 50 ways - and that bass player took an extended solo and totally killed it. Stole the show. Face, melted.

I am not a fan of grooves in general - I think they tend to shut down the music and become ruts. Having said that, William Paker and Hamid drake have really developed some grooves that are so deep that in, IMO, are at their best played as primary material in their incredible duo:

Since we're starting to go into some more jazz oriented grooves; I always felt this tune's bassline had a certain bit of funk to it.
