I think the term "Funk" is relative, Im 55 and when my 19 year old son talks about funk we are talking about two different things. Anyway I wanted to share 2 examples of a long forgotten brand of funk. It's they we used to get down.I am trying to bring this type of sound back with my band sadley, it's not working.

Please take a listen focus on the bass work, both are primative recording by todays standard, but it's the way this type of message gets across.

    BTW, both tracks are "crackin"

    look up.."The Gaturs" good stuff
I consider the stuff you posted funk...but on the groove side...
When I think pure unadulterated funk...I have to always give it up to James Brown.

  7. Oh, man, that second link had an associated link to the Persuaders! I'll bet your band members are too young or this; this is the stuff I grew up on, so it's really my comfort zone for bass playing. I have to work at the other styles (still can't slap, but I will get that in due time). I'll be 50 in March, I'm feeling you, Man.

Another vote here for James Brown. "Cold Sweat" or if you want to go all the way back - "Out Of Sight".

The bass line on that Dyke & The Blazers track is just killer. Thanks for posting that.

  9. Go to Amazon and look for:

    "Raw Funk," and "Cold Heat."
    These are the real deal.

    Cool,

As I mentioned , the term "Funk" is relative. James Brown is in the top 5. However, keep in mind, Dyke & the Blazer never had 1 hit, very underground.

You have to put your "ghetto" on to get into their groove. "The bass line is Killer"
