Yes, Paul Jackson and James Jamerson were lousy funk player s as they don't/didn't play Jazz basses.... .

Funk is a state of mind. You could be funky with a pawn shop $20 Rogue bass.

Funk isn't really limited to a particular bass, but really the player's style. I've always thought funk isn't so much about what notes you play, but what notes you don't play. The hardware is secondary.
