You are so right. But some of us turn into legends earlier than others. Mostly when we're dead though. 'About the dead only good things'... It is a saying in the Netherlands, don't know how to put it exactly ... like even when you've been a prick your whole life, when you die, people tend to say: 'Well... actually he was a funny guy wasn't he? Weather Report is Fusion?????

I don't know if you read the inlay of Jaco's debutalbum with the comment of Pat Metheny, but who calls his music fusion... oh man... you would definitely be punched by now! They really hated when people said it was fusion. It isn't... it's jazz with all its experiments and high skills.. it's all bout 'having the guts to do it' like Wayne Shorter says in the inlay of 'Live and Unreleased.'

Well, who are we talking about here?
If you want to say Weather Report is not Fusion...fair enough.
But then you start using Jaco's solo material as example, much of it having R'n'B and Rock elements (although mostly Jazz).
Remember, "Fusion" is not the dirty word it once was.

Yeah -- kind of like putting a huge glass pyramid in front of the Louvre! That's progress too, right?



*note* The above is a joke. I am in fact a lover of fusion (especially UZEB and the more rock/R&B influenced Jaco) -- both listening to and playing original fusion in a D&B and drums/bass/keys setup. Also, I have no opinion on the pyramid and the Louvre.



All of that said...Jaco paid his dues, alright. I do enjoy the "tune it" comment though! Didn't Jaco once say in a television interview that while he wasn't the first person to play fretless, he was in fact the first person to play it in tune?
