the man was getting heckled. im listening to a weather report bootleg from 5-30-76 at the roxy (my dad was at this gig!) and jaco takes his normal solo spot. at the start of his solo, some guy in the audience yells "hey, where's alphonso!" then you hear another scream when he starts his onkonkole y trompa harmonic thing. this time its "tune it you stupid rookie!" at this point jaco had only been in the band for like a month and at times it shows. but just to think, the guy's catching hell from some bone head in the crowd and ends up becoming a legend.
good point. he probably caught hell. the funniest thing on this boot is not just the guy heckling, but the anger in the tone of his voice. the guy calls him a stupid rookie like jaco did something to his mama
the second comment came midway through his solo i dont think there was anything he could have done to please those guys. mind you, its only two people that are audible. everyone else seemed pretty pleased.
I only thought there where hecklers at Rock n Roll concerts. I thought a jazz audience where smarter then that.
Well at the time many people who were listening to rock were into jazz aswell and weather report is Fusion.
It happens everywhere. I've even heard "Play some Skynard!" at a jazz-fusion show...pretty sure that was a joke though
Yeah I guess your right. I heard George Harrison got beat up in the early Beatle days because they got rid of Pete Best. Stupid Hecklers!
But that wasn't a jazz audience. It was a fusion or "Jazz-rock" (hate that label) audience. And Jimk, Alphonso followed Miroslav, not the other way round.
Hell, I've yelled "Whipping Post" at a piano trio gig. (It was a friend's gig, and he appreciated the joke.) The thought of Jaco getting heckled is pretty amusing. However, I think that Weather Report was a better band with Alphonso than with Jaco.
I saw Jaco live in NYC in about 1982. Needless to say he was stunning. During a solo spot some jackass yelled "Stanley Clarke". Jaco ignored him and the show went on without incident.
Hi Guys! (ma first post here, after reading and learning a lot from you) maybe I'ma lil offtopical, but: I got a live Bootleg from Richard Bona Band in Stockholm with a funny moment: Bona: So, what we gonna play right now? someone from Audience: Anything man! somebody else: Take 5!!! ...laughter... Bona (not believing what he heard): TAKE FIVE!?! Keyboader starts with dudup dudup du du, dudup .... and Bona starts to SING the Clarinette-Melody for some seconds. mfg Florian
