Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

I just re-read my post and I’m sorry if it’s come off a bit defensive and harsh, and I truly appreciate the help. I’m just not a noob and been successfully updating and programming this pedal for years now.
Sorry if my statement about user error sounded like it was aimed at you; your case was meant to be covered by my mention of exceptions. I realise from our conversations that you’re pretty familiar with the workings of the FI and have been using it much longer than me. I understand it must be even more frustrating to know that you know what you’re doing but still are experiencing problems. I wonder if there could maybe be a fault with your midi out port on the fi.

No worries @Quatschmacher .

I understand you’re trying to help and sorry Im crabby... I’m just so frustrated.

I’m starting to think the same thing about the midi out too. I will have to test it out to see if there is an issue with it. I feel it has to be a hardware issue. I’ve had some issues with the editor being fickle before, but it usually works after a few attempts. What I’m experiencing now is highly unusual. Driving me crazy lol.

Unfortunately I have to mix a townhall event tonight so I won’t be able to check it out until tomorrow. I was hoping to try out some of your new patches this weekend. Hopefully I figure this out. Hopefully it is something as simple as a cold solder joint.

stay tuned....

Is there any other piece of equipment (other than the FI) that was common to all attempts to connect?

It would seem unlikely that a pin was broken in both USB ports you used on your two computers. (I’m assuming you didn’t use a USB hub.)

It’s odd that your FI can receive PC messages on its input but won’t connect.

Does it connect when not in update mode? i.e. are you able to browse patches from your PC (using just a single cable) via the editor and have them load into the edit buffer? Or is there no connection in that instance either?

As per the update instructions, when updating the FI to v3 you MUST write the complete factory v3 set of 99 patches to the pedal and you MUST do this in boot menu mode- this ensures that the pedal doesn’t load a v2 file stored in the pedal and that all old-format data is cleared out of the memory. If you don’t do this you will experience errors.

Just to be clear on this- loading the V3 presets is necessary after firmware update... I thought I read that the older presets would convert when loaded, so I simply loaded those. I haven't encountered any errors or issues- should I reload the V3 firmware, THEN the V3 patches, THEN the old patches?

I had trouble w/ the Roland for this update, too. Rather than sink time into troubleshooting the UM-1, I just swapped interfaces. (Another mini interface was also balky, but an old Firepod was third-time’s-the-charm.)

Yes. Writing the v3 soundset is essential for clearing the memory of any v2 info. If you don’t do this, you will have problems at some point.

My apologies if I wasn’t clear before so I’ll explain what I was referring to. The cold solder joint reference was pertaining to the midi out connection on the PC board of the FI, not the USB connections on the computers.

The only constant in my trial and error was the FI. Everything else was swapped in testing. I will be trying again later this evening.

I am not able to connect to the editor at all. I never get the dashes on the FI indicating it connected to the computer. And I agree. It is very odd since I have done this countless times before. That is why I’m thinking it could be a hardware issue with the FI. I’m going to try resetting the FI to see if that does anything.

It is bizarre. I appreciate the help.

Something just dawned on me. Is it possible that the midi connections on the FI need a chassis ground in order to operate with the editor? I did rehouse my FI and I honestly can’t remember if I have used the editor since the FI was rehoused.
Has anyone successfully done the update in a rehoused FI?

I haven't even tried yet...I'll see if I can get to it this weekend, we have a few weeks off the road and I have some definite updating/programming/patchbuilding to do.

I know a bunch of us have the Compacts, so I've assumed that someone else has done so.
