Even a decent synth will completely destroy anything we can do on a bass guitar though :( I understand how lame it is to play keys from a performance standpoint but for the sound there is really no comparison IMO.

I think comparisons of the two units is premature. We haven't heard any legit samples of a factory SY300. The bass demo wasn't awful, but I'm not dying to buy it either.

I would hope the Future Impaqt features classic and new tones. If the screenshot of the editor is a real indication, then the future Impaqt will be the real winner if the price is right.

Will you break the MMM for a FI? Or will you only "list" yourself with the hopes of applying the award towards the purchase.

This is true, but there is so much fun to be had and knowledge to be obtained from trying to transform your bass into a synth. Personally, I get more excited by this method. Keyboard bass certainly won't go away, but bass-guitar-synth tones have come a long eat, and will only be progressing with each device.

I don't agree with the general Keyboard Synth >> than Bass Synth. I have both and I think both are great for different things. I look at them as having different types of expression. When you want Synth timbers with bass action or play-ability go Bass Synth. When you want slurpy portamento slides knobby interfaces and patch-ability go synth module or even good software.

I'm not going for a Bernie Worrel vibe on a bass pedal synth when I have a moog in front of me, that doesn't mean I don't often prefer the dynamics and tone of my Octavius Squeezer.

I don't disagree with this. I like taking both paths and using the one that works best for the tune.

Totally agree, the SY-300 complicates things, but at least until we know more information, this is not an apples-to-apples comparison. I'm still holding out hope that the Panda Future Impact (henceforth I'm calling this sucker the PFI) will be $400 max. $400 and 1/3rd the size for the PFI puts it in a different class than the SY-300.

Also, I fully agree with the point that playing bass synth on a bass is a completely different vibe than playing them on a keyboard. I know my way around a keyboard somewhat, but I would rather play bass. They are different instruments and while I understand the "you should just play it on a keyboard" sentiment, in its own way that's just as narrow-minded as all of the anti-effects stuff we're used to hearing.

I can hack it on keys. 2 years ago I sprained my left wrist (by being dumb and jumping off of things:rollno:...) and had the choice of missing gigs or key bass. I picked key bass. I was using a Korg intended for piano more than bass, but it wasn't awful. I didn't do a good job. I filled a frequency rather than made music. Playing bass lines with your right hand(melody hand) on keys is weird. I found out immediately how note attack effects a groove, how much easier 80s bass lines are on keys, and that I love playing bass guitar no matter the tone.

I like playing bass guitar.
I like playing keys.
I like synth sounds.
The world is my oyster. :bassist:

I got off topic though. Practically, I want the Panda Future Impact if it's reasonably affordable. Old deep impact demos excite me more than the new SY300 does.

Edit:
The PFI will be a game changer if it can cop the synth sounds from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and contemporary music. That sneak peek of the editor looks like a good start.

try a grid controller like Maschine or Livid Base. You can play in 4th, 5ths, custom scales...what ever. It translates much better for me and I can still get the control only available on table top hardware with fredom to twiddle knobs and pitch wheels. I love the freedom to twiddle knobs and set portamento. However, I also love to hear my bass intonation translated to a synth. I would not suggest sacrificing one for the other.

I don't think the SY300 and PFI are going to be comparable. Sure they're both synths, so they will be compared, but I just see them as different flavours of fruit to be plucked and bit deeply into and then let the juice run down my face, all over the place and... *ahem*

Will I cave for an PFI? That's for me to know and Ol' Man Time to find out. I'll just say, I'd make a good longhaul mothertrucker... ;)

I think perhaps my main synth application is different than most here. I owned a Deep Impact to cop new wave 80's, and dance tunes, not the band Muse. I hate that dude!! Lol! Not because of his band or style, because of him, the deep impact skyrocketed in price on the used market!! Lol! I refuse to pay that exorbitant price.

Unfortunately mine died on me and could not be fixed. I used the Korg G5 for a while which was fantastic but was a bit limited for its size, no true bypass, etc.

I agree with others here as I would much rather cop synth bass tones from my bass guitar than to play keys, but unfortunately for me I never found a synth pedal that could do it all, hence I've been playing synth bass on keys for over 20 years now, and probably will always have to do so. I went the synth pickup route but just wasn't into modding my Fodera to do so, so I scrapped that idea. I also had the Peavey Midi bass for a while but that was glitchy too.

I think the only way I can do away with my keyboard is if a pedal copped PCM sounds as well as fat analog bass sounds that I can blend, but I don't think that is going to happen.

So basically I'm down to presently using my Zoom MS-60b as much as possible for synth tones (blended with an Octave pedal at times), and my Korg R3 keyboard.

I am looking forward to adding the PFI to my pedal board because I do miss my Deep Impact. The tones on that pedal were great, especially blended with an octave pedal. Sweet!

The Boss pedal seems promising, but it just takes up a little too much real estate for my taste. I hope the PFI comes to fruition soon, because I have a feeling he may lose some sales to the Boss SY300.
