Fuzz Box or Overdrive That Keeps The Low End

i use the mxr bass fuzz deluxe. guarenteed al your low and more. it only effects the mids and highs. jim dunlop says it's vintage 70's sounding fuzz pedal. i say it's a basic fuzz pedal. nothing to dislike, to some people nothing to like. great for your first fuzz, and great for your last.

i don't have an overdrive, but i've researched alot of pedal, but people are picky when it comes to overdrives.

overdrives: mxr bass overdrive, ebs billy sheehan overdrive, carl martin bass drive, aguilar agro, etc.

Amptweaker bass pedals with dry low blend. The tightfuzz can make my bass sound deeper. The tightdrive probably is great for this too.

+1 The Link Removed is amazing. Dial in your ideal fuzz tone, then adjust the Dry Lows knob to taste, bringing in as much clean, full low end as you like.

If you've got a bit of cash to burn and don't mind an FX unit being on the larger side, I'd highly recommend the Owen electronics bass bomb driver. You'd struggle to find another overdrive/fuzz pedal to match the bass bombs all round performance regarding low end integrity, harmonics and usability. With being in the UK itll be less costly too as Martin Owen lives in Manchester so p&p won't be a daft price.

An effects loop with a crossover like the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] is a good solution for keeping tight low end with any effect not just distortion.
Agreed - why go through this process with every effect, work out a way to split your signal up. Although for some it isn't the solution as they want the effect across all frequency ranges but they don't want to lose a particular frequency slice. I pondered the SFX S&M but the Rolls SX-21 won strictly because it looked possibly more tweakable and was available cheaply and quickly.

Point of clarification, that original link is to the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (Crossover and Mix), as opposed to the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (Split and Mix).

I didn't really get on too well using distortion pedals with the X&M. The pedal is great, but there are two problems with the concept itself:

- You are feeding a lower signal into the distortion pedal since the lows are all gone. This makes the pedal respond differently and you won't be able to get as much distortion out of it.

- If all your lows are clean and uncompressed, and your mids/highs compressed to hell through a fuzz, then the low end can be overpowering on the note attack when you dig in, and the lows can disappear on long sustained notes. This can be solved by putting a compressor in the low loop, but that's another pedal involved. The EBS Billy Sheehan pedal solves this by building in a compressor for the clean low end.

Using it on a wah/filter/phaser pedal however, was awesome!

I use the EH germanium 4 big muff. Very versatile and goes from a little edge till full fuzz.
It has the big muff tone knob and it enables you to have incredible bass boost at a valve amp like edge of overdrive.
My best bass fuzz, overdrive!
