Fuzz for Doom Metal

a 100w tube amp that you can crank with some 15s is the BEST thing you can do for your tone in a doom metal band. Too bad amps aren't cheap :(. Combined with fuzzes you can do even more.

Fuzz + SS still gets the job done though. I use a superfuzz and a dod 250 when my tube amp is sick.

Planning to get a tall font russian and a b:assmaster when I'm not poor.

I think any fuzz will do the job, its all just down to personal choice.

just picked up one of these and i love it for my doom. velcro like rip to the tone. my version is newer and in a smaller Enclosure.

Also try a rat clone. Fuzzrocious makes a good one.

Couple of things...

£100 Won't buy what some people are suggesting here. You are getting some good suggestions, but they don't fit the budget.

If you like your Line 6 combo amp, cool. Plan on upgrading your rig. If you are truly joining a doom band, 175 SS watts through 1-15" speaker just isn't going to cut it.

I'm not sure what amp brands are cheap in your country. Peavey, Hartke, Ashdown, I'd start with a couple of 15s or an 8-10 with a minimum of 300 watts. Buy once, cry once.

As for your original question, good fuzz on a budget, I'd grab a Harley Benton Ultimate Drive



I use mine with an old NYC Big Muff. Works real nice. Before that I was using a BAT Pharaoh with the Ultimate Drive, but the Muff just sounded more musical to my ear and played nice with my other pedals too. Ultimate Drive is the best bang for the buck out there right now.

Great suggestion, will probably be my next purchase. Just trying to justify buying a third overdrive pedal. :D

Man, all you need to do is compare an ehx big muff with a Proco rat. One of those will meet your needs. Pick the one you like and there you go.

There is no need for all the various knock-offs and overpriced boutique pedals. They are all modeled after muffs and rats for a reason.

They also build on those designs. Fuzzrocious has a handful of modifications that can add a lot to a rat or muff pedal. Self oscillation is very cool in a doom setting.

*also not in OP's budget range...

For saggy squelchy fuzz that doesn't drop out of the mix and has bags of low end - Team Awesome Fuzz Machine. Have a search on basschat.co.uk, there was one for sale on there 2nd hand recently for around £100.

For angry grinding distortion, you can't beat a good old Boss ODB-3, which is also cheap as chips. It really snarls with a twin pickup bass such a Jazz or PJ, listen to some Acid King to hear one in a doom/stoner setting! Needs a tweeter-less cab and ideally a tube or hybrid head to tame the sound of angry bees though.

After looking at reviews and videos of all these lovely peddles the Sanford and Sonny Blue Beard is pretty much exactly what I want for my sound. I can't even find a price for one in the UK though so it seems off the table even if it were in my price range.

My task is now to find a peddle that sounds most similar to the Blue Beard for under £100.

What do you think?

Build a kit civil war or ram's head era muff. Maybe add a bass mod.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, the Bluebeard is supposedly just a 'GGG Tuned' muff circuit from General Guitar Gadgets:

If you want a similar sound on the cheap in an easy to buy mass produced pedal, check the EHX Bass Muff Deluxe or Way Huge Swollen Pickle. If you liked the Bluebeard, other similar sounding boutique options that turn up used far more often are the Earthbound Supercollider, Wren& Cuff Tall Font Russian, and Fuzzrocious Grey Stache - keep an eye on the basschat classifieds since you're in the UK, I've seen all three pop up from time to time on there but never a Bluebeard!

I got my Bluebeard this summer. it's a great, great pedal. I had to wait for 10 months, the wait list was 100+. They cost new $150. I saw a used one once, somewhere, don't remember what forum, but I remember the price: $200!
So, yes, i atotally agree with dannybuoy - go to basschat and get something used he mentioned.

Seems like your getting an idea of what you want....

In stoner and doom music tone is everything and can make or break you. My suggestion is if your looking to get going on the cheap pick up a muff whatever one you like and don't stop there keep trying and buying over time your sound will come.

Also I find that every fuzz helps me to play different parts and if your using solid state you'll probably want a really good overdrive tone before you get to full on fuzz Among other things i use a modded boss sd-1 that I never turn off and a muff for the really crushing stuff and solos

As far as the fancy stuff I'm really into those tall font Russians

And for an medium between the boutique and ehx the the mojo hand colossus Seems to be a winner

As previously mentioned: Swollen Pickle (wide range of tone with this one), Tall Font Russian (a one trick pony but what a trick!), Stomp Under Foot Dirty Rooster is my personal favorite.

I also like Stomp Under Foot Green Russian and his Civil War pedal. All delivering epic fuzz.

The Swollen Pickle has made a good impression on me, tonewise. Sounds pretty beastly. But I've heard it can be really hard to dial in what you want. Seems there are too many options between the knobs and the trimpots. I want to get a fuzz that will be HEAVVVVVVYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY but I also don't want it to be complicated.

100 pounds sterling is roughly 165.00 in U.S. Green (give or take the current exchange rate)

Used Black out Effects Musket fuzz is my First suggestion
EHX Bass Big Muff
DMB Bumble
Way Huge Swollen Pickle

ALL of these will get you where you want to go!!!
