Fuzz recommendation?

I've searched and searched and I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. I don't have a lot of money to try lots of different fuzzes. Pretty much need to get the right one first try, if possible. I've read lots of reviews of fuzz pedals but too many times folks don't really talk about what kind of music they're playing so I don't know if 'awesome' for them would even come close for the type of music I want it for.

Amyway, I'm looking for a bass fuzz that will come somewhat close to Tommy Bolin's 'Post Toastie' sound and also Sly's 'Dance To The Music'. Doesn't have to be exact, just in that ball park. Not interested in overdrives or distortions. And the cheaper the better!

Thanks in advance!

do what ive been doing: go to the guitar center, buy a pedal. mess with it for a few days until youve played thouroughly through it on alot of modes. determine if its what you want or not. return it. if you liked it, find one used. if you didnt like it, get your oney back and hook yourself up wit a new pedal. tried a regular big muff, trading it for a bass tomorrow, otherwise a russian if they dont have the bass model

Based on these example tracks (both of which are AWESOME, btw), I'd recommend a Bass Big Muff. It is great for getting that vintage "Dance to the music" vibe (even if it was probably a Maestro or whatever on the real recording).

Who played bass on "Post Toastie" by the way? That actually could be a vintage Big Muff!

The BBM can certainly do more modern fuzz tones as well, but dollar for dollar, with your "classic fuzz" needs in mind, it is unbeatable. A way better choice than the pricier Supercollider.

he can also get the new big muff with the wicker switch, for that vintage big muff tone.

well don't go off half-cocked recommending that... nobody's heard it yet!

I just listened to Post Toastie and it could be an old Big Muff Pi, but it's certainly something you can duplicate - also, large portions of this tune have clean (if overdriven) bass tone as well. One part seems to have a slow pahse effect over the bass track. Cool tune for sure

Bassist's name was Reggie McBride. Played with tons of folks since the late 60's.

Thanks, guys. I believe I'll try the EH Bass Big Muff. I was able to listen to a few clips on the EHX site and I think that's close enough and not too expensive.
