Fuzz recommendations. Yes, I know, sorry...

Hmm most of these suggestions aren't muff clones. The ones that come to mind right away are the LBM which is known to work well with bass, the Pickle Pie 'B' by Wren and Cuff, Skreddy Mayo (good luck finding one though), GGG or BYOC muff. You could always mod your own for bass too...hope this helps.

Are you decent with a soldering iron? I built the GGG muff which sounds great on bass. They have two case options for it. I opted for the larger one which isn't that large at all compared to the original BMP. It's about the same size as the Little Big Muff.

I love my russian muff.

The only downside is there is not an adapter output, but you can buy one of those things that clips on to the 9-volt tabs for like two bucks.

I'm having it modified so that I can plug a DC-cord in it.

To me it sounds great. When I do blend it, it just takes some edge off it. I have no problem playing with a guitarist with it either. I have seen a heap of posts about blending muffs lately and im about it.

I know there are lots of soundclips available on the wiki and lots of pedals to choose from and taste is a big factor... But here's the thing:

I've got a Blowtorch which I'm satisfied with for more "modern"-sounding fuzz tones. And I love the onboard EQ and blend and general usefulness of it.

I've also got a Big Muff, and I love the wooly, warm sound of it but not the general un-usefulness of it (giant box, needs babysitting with a blend pedal).

So can anyone recommend a Muff-a-like in a smaller enclosure (or something with similar sonic characteristics; wooly and old-school with bucketloads of fuzz available), pref. with a blend control?.

I hate to be a noob, but what's a blend pedal?
I can guess that it blends the original sound with the FX channel but I've never heard of one before.

Maybe the Russian one really is a different beast - I don't know, I was never willing to pay the difference based on perceived "mojo".

Like I said before, I just like to have a blend option. I like my low notes to contain less fuzz and have some body and shape to them (not necessarily a lot of low frequencies) so I prefer to preserve the clean sound and mix it. I don't play rock music - I (usually) need to still present a bass guitar sound when I switch a fuzz pedal on. The Messdrive Hybrid+ sounds like a great pedal, but I don't think it will work for me.

In my case I use a Boss LS-2, and have a Big Muff in one of its loops. One of its settings ("A+B Mix -> Bypass") lets you blend the return of one loop with its other loop, and that's what I use to mix Muffed tone with UnMuffed tone.

What I'm trying to do is replace that setup (one LARGE fuzz pedal, plus the Boss LS-2 which has 6 jacks attached to it and takes up a lot of board space) with one vintage-sounding fuzz pedal that offers a clean/dirty blending feature itself.

Am attempting to buy a Pickle Pie "B" from Wren & Cuff but being thwarted by PayPal!

I've actually integrated PayPal's payment system with my own ecommerce system (and I have to say their sandbox developer area sucks in ways that go way beyond even the wildest imagined potential suckage of any other payment system provider I've ever dealt with, and yet I persevered) but after the rigmarole they're putting me through over a simple pedal purchase I'm tempted to withdraw support for them out of spite.

I sold my blender because i decided that i had bought it as a fad. My russian big muff sounded totally sexier without it. Bitchin fuzz.
