First, let me apologize for adding to the endless pool of "what effect should I get?" threads. That being said, I could really use some help deciding what fuzz to get to satisfy my very specific need. I've listened to a ton of sound clips, but that just doesn't give me enough info about how pedals sound through an amp in a room, or in a mix for that matter.
Second, a word on what I've had before. I've owned a EHX bass muff and a Swollen Pickle.
I ditched the Muff because I always thought it sounded thin and, frankly, pretty lame. I didn't get the definition/"oomph" I wanted in the modes other than the "blend," and the blend mode always sounded like the fuzz was just sitting oddly apart from my clean tone. I just never digged the tone on this one at all.
The SP was pretty cool sounding, but I found myself constantly needing to fiddle with dials to get it to sit right (especially annoying since a couple controls were internal). It was either too loud and boomy, or to raspy and scooped. I found tones I liked on the SP, but they were few and far between (and required to much fiddling). It seemed, to me, to be very temperamental.
What I'm looking for:
1) Simple: Three (maybe four, if I can be convinced it's worth it) knobs max. I don't want diode switching, EQ, blending, or excessive controls of any kind. I want something I can set and forget (sans adjusting a knob for that occasional deeper tone or longer sustain).
2) Flexible: I'd like a pedal that sounds pretty good, no matter how it's set. The fewer useless tones, the better.
3) Bass: I've got a flexible drive/distortion for bite. I want low, deep, almost endless sustain. The kind of fuzz that hits you in the pants/stomach more than the face/chest. I want to feel it when I turn it on, just as much as hear it. That being said, some sizzle/grit/grind is always good.
4) Tone: Like the previous point, bass is good. I'm not interested in gated or glitchy fuzz.
5) Volume: Plenty of volume on tap (although, there is such a thing as too much. I found myself setting the volume on the SP well below 9 o'clock pretty regularly).
6) Price: Please no $300 suggestions. I could do $150 up to maybe $200, but I can't justify any more than that.
