I’m a music-lover more than a musician, played double bass in Junior High, switched to electric bass some time later, then my life took a different path and I haven’t touched an instrument in twenty years.
I never played in an ensemble out of school, never gigged, don’t know the first thing about keeping time for a band. I just liked to play the bass, for its own sake.
Earlier this year, my daughter signed up for acoustic guitar lessons, and I figured that the best way to tell her to practice every day was to show her how to practice every day, so I bought a Denver Acoustic Bass Guitar and started practicing my scales.
After a month of that, I found my old copy of Bach’s Prelude in G, transposed to C for Electric Bass. I worked on that for a bit, then had a brainstorm, and restrung my instrument ADGC and started playing the piece in G, and at Cello Pitch. (With this “baritone” tuning, every note is accessible, and as a bonus, the resonances of the ABG are better at these pitches than a fourth down playing EADG. IMHO.)
I’m still working on it, and I expect I will be for quite some time. It’s not so much about playing it, in a way, it’s a way of interacting with the music that is different when working through the piece, experimenting with fingering and intonation and so on, I experience the music in a different way than I do if I just listen to someone else playing it.
