G&G Case Smell Driving Me Crazy

When I bought my Fender AO series bass it came with the G&G case........ problem is the smell its well horrible and I don't like it, I actually wont put my bass guitar in its case because its a nitro finish and unfortunately as soon as the nitro touches the "carpet" inside the case for more than 20 minutes the smell hangs to the bass and wont go away.

I have tried literally everything from baking soda, to leaving it outside open to spraying fabric conditioner inside but no....... still there.

Personally in a situation like this I would try an ozone generator. Has worked for me in the past in somewhat similar circumstances. And of course, YMMV.

I'm of the impression we're dealing with a brand-new case packed with PUR foam. The stuff has the tendency to out-gas which may be contributing to the odor. It's been suggested in other applications that ozone gas may promote further degradation of the PUR but we need to factor-in concentration and frequency / duration of exposure. I wouldn't have any problems doing a single application and assessing efficacy. I have a couple ideas as to how I'd seal the case.

If it is off gassing, you can just leave it open until it is done. I would consider selling it and getting one that doesn't smell.

Have you considered not smelling the case? Or if you really want to, leave it open for a week or set it outdoors for a day or so. The adhesives and wrap off gassing isn’t forever.

Leave it open and set it in the sun for 6 or so hours. That should help a lot

My G&Ls all have G&G cases and they smell terrible. When they were newer it was far worse, I took the basses out and set the cases near a window with the window open to air them out. The smell has died down after a few years but still smell a little

I have a generic tweed harshell case I use for my Ibanez ATK, that smells like Taco Shells. I like tacos, so it doesn't bother me.

Tell me about it! I think judging by my experience ahem....! It is Formaldehyde its like walking into a mortuary, I think it is the pile "carpet" inside I think its maybe in the glue.....
I don't know why they outsource their cases manufacturing anyway really, they used to make their own for the most part, if the case smells like that imagine the damn factory!

Also the smell transfers onto anything it touches (mainly the body) and lingers for months afterwards.

Thanks I have decided to do as you suggested and sell it, purchase one that doesn't smell like an embalmed body as the smell reminds me hugely of Formaldehyde.

haha! I try not to smell it, but sometimes I open it and get knocked over by just opening it !
