I have a 1982 G&L L2000E with a maple/rosewood neck/fretboard (hog body). The back of the neck seems that has not this special sliding feeling touch and the shining view that a maple neck should have. Part of the neck also seems to have faded from yellow to grey somehow.

Does anybody know what is the lacquer type used in these basses? Is there any particular problem related with them? I have also noticed the same bleackened necks in other similar l2000s early 80s basses in photos Is this a coinsidence?

Great Bass,

I can't get the picture to open up. But I have a 81 L1K Hog/RW that has been played a lot and for good reason. The back of the neck was worn through the finish in the sweet spot. It had a great mojo look but got sticky in humid weather and not very playable. I cleaned the bare wood spot and lightly applied Birchwood Casey Gun oil finish (to the worn through areas) and buffed with a light steel wool. It blended in perfectly and plays like butter all over. I cannot feel the finish transition which buffing took care of. You can still see the slight difference in color (through the finish) where the sweet spot had the evidence of being played a long time. So it has the mojo look and still plays like a well finished neck. I'm sure the neck was originally a nitro finish on the 81 I have. Not sure on your 82, but a wool buffed BC finish is a solution that worked well for me and left the rest of the finish intact.
