This is currently with DavePlaysBass.
It came to me with a dead preamp, set vol/vol tone.
Not bad, but, losing the G&L treb and bass: bad choice, IMO.
It's staying all passive, with Dave modding the guts to:
vol/treb/bass
pup select
and dual three position L1000 coil taps incorporating single coil.
In don't know that I can stomach epoxy-ing a 1981 L2000E neck, but, I have a spare L1000 fretless neck...hmmm....

This is strictly personal, but I've always thought G&L's lost some visual appeal when they went to the rear control cover, and gave up front routing, and the control plate on the front.

8 lbs? Nice. I figure my G&L was at least a much better deal in terms of dollars per pound, though.

That's been my experience as well with an L2500 fretless and the single coil mode. I find for fretless using series mode and blending 80% bridge pickup with 20% neck pickup gives a nice thick but burpy tone. Yes, my preamp is modified to allow for pickup blend... something I find very beneficial with the L2500.
Oh, and the bridge mod was a huge improvement as were using stainless steel D'Addario strings (ebony board). Contrary to popular belief, the wear isn't that bad at all. I go for tone, not longevity of a piece of lumber anyway.

I sold the bass, kept the neck (buyer wanted frets, I had a spare neck) and now it's on the 2000E I posted earlier. It doesn't have any real wear to speak of, but, I'm not a terribly aggressive player in terms of beating on the strings.
It has TI Jazz Flats on it now. Pretty low tension, but they seem to sound nice enough.

Agreed. Still, a L-1000 with an eye gouger somehow intriguies me. (tho I've never owned one)
