Took my lb100 to an open mic night last night and had a great time. Tone for days! This was my first time playing out in 5-10 years. Really scratched the itch and has me wanting to get back out more.

Slimming down the body doesn't make it a new model. They slimmed down the SB2, L1K & L2K; added a pre to several passive models; tone knob available in the SB2; SCM in the L2K. It's basically a dumbed-down L-1500 which was far more instrument for the $. Least they could do is keep the great PTB tone system but no, give it a fancy name and as P.T. Barnum said "TA-DA"!

Was I ranting? Now I need another espresso, venti please.

+1 on preferring the Kilo circuit over the L1500/L1505 circuit. I see no need for a bass cut knob on an instrument that I cannot get excessive bass out of. The bass cut is nice on the L2000/L2500/L1000 (pickup location makes a difference).

I will totally admit that the bass roll-off on the L-1500 was pretty pointless, and the 3-way switch for the Kilo is nice, but I'd take a L-1500 over a Kilo any day. I prefer the no-pickguard look and having the preamp. Yes, even with that crazy treble boost. The L-1500 actually sounds pretty good with the preamp on and the tone rolled all the way off.

Just did a refresh of my 84 SB-1. Put in a Nordstrand NP4A that was coming out of another bass and put on a new set of light gauge Labella flats. Adjusted the truss rod and it's all good to go.

My favorite bass pickup is an MFD--any MFD. I would never remove an MFD from any bass for any other pickup, but that's just me. I applaud anyone's mod that helps them bond with a bass. I put an MFD in my LB-100 along with a Seymour Duncan STC-2C-BO 2-band concentric active EQ. Holy smoke!! I have an NS Design WAV4 bass guitar. I replaced the truly dreadful EMG-HZ passive pickup in it. I truly regret that G&L doesn't make a 3.5" soapbar MFD. I put a Lace Alumitone in it. That's a different sound--very smooth. I tolerate it because it gives me some variety, but I still wish for that MFD punch. But @deepestend, I'm glad you're SB-1 is ready to go. Have fun! If it stops being fun, it stops...

This bass was pre-mfd pickups (1984). I never had one for it. I had a darkstar/bisonic in it for a while, but that wasn't the right pickup for this bass. Maybe down the line I'll get an mfd pickup and give it a shot. I used to have an L2000, so I have some experience with the MFD's and really like them.

That's an oldie! Is the pickup in it a split coil?

Yes. It's a P-type pickup. It came with, I believe, an old dimarzio or something that wasn't particularly notable.

I read that the Schaller was basically a clone of the Dimarzio Model P. Does that sound right?

Looks wise, yes.
They had the same adjustable pole pieces.
Sound wise?
No clue.

That being the case, was it the same as the bridge pu single coil MFD currently on the SB-2? Or is the current pickup underwound compared to the old ones?
