Going forward, if G&L were to re-spec the SB-2 bridge pickup to be more than just an adjunct to the splitter, they could have a major hit with a "new" SB-2. :woot:

I definitely think it will help with marketing the bass. I am still wondering about that single coil on the SB-2. I've been told by many that it is underwound because it's designed strictly as a tonal supplement to the split coil. However, I asked Memo at G&L about this, and he tells me that, no, it isn't. It is wound exactly as it was wound back when there were two of them on the original SB-2. Any volume or tonal difference has to do with its near proximity to the bridge.

Yeah I've heard both theories. When I had the gen-2 SB-2's, it never occured to me to compare bridge pups to a Lynx bridge pup. But I can still drag out the Lynx to see if the solo bridge pup sounds as noisy and thin as I recall the gen-2's were, when solo'd (read: less than useful).

My info came from a phone conversation with Memo in which he told me the pickups in the SB-2 ver.1 and the Lynx were the same as the current ones. He appeared to find the rumor that they're not the same to be slightly humorous. I actually asked him because I was thinking of modding a Tribute Kiloton by adding one of those in an approximate JB neck position. I abandoned that quest because the bass is just too beautiful and sounds too good to be cutting on, but I wouldn't mind seeing someone else try it. I was just gonna do it without a pickguard at first to see how it sounded. That way, if it was bad news, the uncut pickguard would cover the "damage."

Hi
I own us l2000 since several years now , i did the k-mod with series/single(outer)/parrallel. I only use the single position which i really like. I would like to try the outer/parrallel/inner mod but i'm a little confused with the diagram ( i used the one found on bassbyleo). Before spending time on it i just would like to make sure where to solder the black wire? If i have to :). Any simplified diagram would be much appreciated!!

If you refer to @DavePlaysBass 's diagram #9, both black and green wires of both PU's go to the ground, none of them go to the switch, only yellow and white wires go to the switch.

I have used @DavePlaysBass's diagram #8 (Parallel/SC(outer)/Series, that is the K-switch with OMG cap) on my G&L basses with dual MFD humbuckers: two ASAT basses and an L-2500. Some people like better the inner coils option (diagram #7). With the #9 diagram, you can choose between either outer SC or inner SC.

2) For some L-5500, L-2500 and L-2500 Custom models, produced in the early- to mid-nineties (mostly ranging from B000008 to B001180).
My own Jan. 1997 L-2500 Custom (so stamped on the neck and the neck pocket) is number B001080.

I also found the pickups on my Tribute JB-2 a little underwhelming, as I did with my Tribute LB-100. That pickup I replaced with an MFD split-coil like in the SB-x basses. With my JB-2, I radically re-wired it with a preamp and a series/parallel switch for the pickups. That woke it right up. I don't know why the JB-2 pickups are both the same size. There's no reason for G&L not to have changed that. I have a Tribute MJ-4. It's basically a JB-2 with an M2000 preamp in it from the factory. (See pic below) The pickups are sized like a regular jazz bass, so I replaced mine with a set of DiMarzio Sixties, though the Cort hum-cancelling pickups were the best-sounding Cort Alnicos that I'd heard. As you alluded to, with the pickups in a JB-2 both being the same length, you cannot buy a set of jazz bass pickups to replace them. You have to buy a pair of neck pickups (I think it is). Kudos to you for the great mods.

Thanks very much Glazenn !!! exactly what i was looking for... actually i did the soldering right after your post and it works well!!! I cant wait to try it with my band, the inner coil both PU position is very punchy yet clear i like it a lot, very promising !!!
