G&L Club Part 7

Bi-cut neck
I had no idea what this was. Third result pulls the main forum. lol

The G&L Discussion Page - View topic - The G&L non-compression truss rod :
The Bi-Cut method involves cutting the neck blank in half longitudinally, making a route on the inside, inserting the truss rod then gluing the two halves together.
The new completed neck blank is then put in a Taylor press with approximately 350 pounds of pressure, assuring a nearly invisible truss rod installation.
The design goal that the Bi-Cut method achieves is exceptional resistance to warping and twisting, because the centrally located glue joint is actually stronger
than the wood on either side.

Cool!

So what are the origins of this club? lol

Okay, that one works.

So, now I ask. Should we cut things here are start a new one? This one is super old. I don't think anyone's gonna get a number -- if that's important at all lol.
Leo, his wife, George, are all gone. G&L is owned and ran by their lifelong friends in BBE Sound now. It's a new era for them. Maybe it should be a new era for us, too.
Thoughts?

There's also the fact that we're over 1500 pages. In the olden days, threads were capped at 1k posts. So, we're arguably over due.

I don't see any need to recreate what already exists.

As you mentioned, the total number of posts in any thread used to be limited, so the standard practice when a thread reached the limit was for a moderator to close the old one and make a new one with the next sequential numerical identifier in the title. Thus G&L Club Part 7. With the 2014 update, that cap was removed and there was no longer any reason for any threads to be closed and started over.

It was particularly annoying to keep track of things across threads, and (obviously) if you didn't go FIND the new one to resubscribe, you were out of luck till you happened to notice. It just doesn't make any sense to reset a thread if you don't have to for forum limitations.

As for club numbers, we haven't been doing numbers with any consistency for probably a decade. No reason to restart, IMO. Now that I think about it, I've been following the G&L Club for probably 13-14 years, certainly before "Club 7" was started in 2014. I guess I'm kinda old now.

Yeah. 🤷🏽‍♀️ There's a lot of things that are kind of annoying around here. lol. Half of it, though, TB probably can't do anything about.

What bugs me is that often the older iterations of this club show up in search results before this one. I have to go through three steps and search from a dedicated page in order to see them in order by date.
The other G&L clubs being around don't really help.

I made a number of suggestions related to Clubs and other things. No traction.

Generally speaking, I just wish we could expand beyond what we have now. I want more capabilities from these Clubs if they're going to be anything. Right now, it's just a tag and thing to put on one's signature or profile. I can't even search this thread.

I want more from the site, too. I think it'd be great if they ran a XMPP, Matrix, or IRC server and a Jamulous server. Could have chatrooms for clubs and subforum. Supporters could have their own servers to jam together on.

It's good to want improvements, and to suggest them from time to time, so don't stop doing it If they're adopted, you've made a difference. If they're not, at least they give folks something to think about. As for me, I kinda like the laid-back, helpful attitudes of the members here. I've learned a lot, and I've done my best to provide help in areas where I have a degree of expertise or what I consider a valid opinion. But when it comes to this club, I have to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Happy Thursday! Wanted to give you all an update on my damaged SB-2t. Got a hold of Memo thanks to your posts, we communicated back and forth, he sent me a return number and I sent them the bass a week and a half ago to get a new body built (hopefully).

It apparently was received last Thursday but now my emails have gotten no response and calling his extension keeps going to a full mailbox. Trying not to panic and hoping that whoever signed for that bass was indeed a G&L employee and not some other person! Will keep you guys posted.

With the Basses By Leo forum site going away, has there been any thought about replacing it somehow?
It's officially being closed? 😞 I was trying to register on there recently. May have tried a year or two ago but, I don't recall.
The page isn't loading for me right now. Before, it didn't look like it, nor the guitar version, had been updated in a decade. Any site that's going to let the software become so obsolete and insecure should be taken down quite frankly.

Well, I guess this is all we've got then..

I dunno. I'm certainly not up for running a replacement website that could possibly have tens of thousands of users. lol.

We can't talk about this because it's going to get deleted if/when the mods see it. Gotta keep it focused on TB.

When I had G&L build me a new neck for my SB-2, I had zero contact with them. The only way I knew it arrived there was by my tracking number. Four months later, with no notice, the bass with its new neck showed up on my doorstep, much to my surprise.

I've been checking back in on that site from time to time, and nothing has been announced that I've seen.

Yeah... Last year I e-mailed them about buying the bi-coil jazz pickups they used to have. They told me I had to get something from a third party and that they don't sell pickups for other basses.
I sent several messages on separate occasions since and have not gotten a single reply. They seem to be understaffed in the CS dept or something. 😕
Either that or they think I'm crazy and don't wanna deal with me. 🤪

I called again and finally got through! Bass arrived but they haven't had a chance to look at it as they are super busy setting up a shipment of Tributes that just came in. At least I know it arrived.🙂

Just a heads up concerning G&L and replacement bodies, necks, etc.

I ordered an L2000 BTO from Greg in early 2023. I received it in October 2023. I noticed right away that it t had a pretty noticeable crack on the neck/body joint. I contacted Greg the day it arrived. He started dealing with G&L right away to rectify it. I had it in my possession exactly one day, I shipped it back. A rather extended discussion occurred with G&L. Finally, they agreed to rectify the issue.

In late March 2024, I received the bass at home. Once again, it had the exact same crack at the exact same place. And I mean, the exact exact same. I contacted Greg and G&L again. They took it back. In theory, they are building a new body for it. I say "in theory", because I wouldn't be surprised if they shipped the same bass back again with the same crack. Obviously, they didn't build a new body, they just painted over the crack, thinking that this would resolve the issue. This is the cheapest option of course. But it didn't resolve the issue. And you would think that a company that builds basses professionally would know this. But, they did what they did.

As usual, Greg has been great about this. He really did everything he could and is obviously not to blame for this issue. He didn't build this bass. He doesn't do QC there. He's not the guy (or gal) making the decisions. This is on G&L.

So basically, I paid for a brand new bass in early 2023 and had exactly one day with it. I've spent god knows how many hours dealing with this issue. We are well over a year later now. No bass. I've communicated a few times with Memo about this but as we all know, it's just not easy. Clearly, they are going to do what they are going to do, irrelevant of calls or whatever. What is particularly frustrating is that since I shipped in this bass, they have build hundreds of basses from scratch but haven't chosen to properly deal with mine. I guess they have my money so they are not in a hurry. They figure I can wait.

I really love G&L basses (unfortunately). I really love their products, when they put out a well build bass it is a real thing of beauty and function, but I have a deep distain for how the company treats its customers. This is not my first rodeo with them. I'm not mentioning this here to complain, just offering a heads up to people who are dealing with G&L concerning replacement bodies, necks, etc. You may be in a for a wait. And really check your instrument when it comes back. I don't like the endless wait for them to decide to actually deliver what they theoretically promised over a year ago. But I find it really scary that when you send a brand new bass back for repairs for something they really should've gotten right the first time, they send back the exact same problem. This, from a company that builds basses professionally. It's pretty amazing, to me.
