Dear G&L,

Please make a 5 string version of your split coil MFD. I know you have been busy trying to get the MFD singles to market for 6+ years, but I really think a 5 string split coil would be an instant hit. A 5 string SB-1 is also a great idea.

I've been told by Memo Romero at G&L that these pickups are the same as the bridge pickup on the newer SB-2. Why G&L changed it to a PJ I don't know. Maybe because these single coil pickups really are single coil and they hum, but the split coil doesn't.

Since they're MFD pickups and not Alnicos, they won't sound like a jazz bass pickup. Frankly, it'd probably be a really fine sound, but I can't say from experience.

What jglunt said. They are true single coils and the do hum when solo. So kinda like a jazz vibe but it most definitely doesnt sound like a jazz. The MFD singles are unlike anything else. Perhaps that was it's downfall.

I would describe the old SB-2 as very aggressive at all times. The pj version is similar in that way but the jj and pj version also sound very different from each other.

Collect em all! I love these basses.

So I got this SB-2 not long ago. It was basically in unplayed condition and very clean. One exception - greenish corrosion on the frets.

Love it! But the 1.5" neck is the same "problem" for me.
Maybe I should think about adding a Kiloton position pickup onto my L1k?

Look for an old L-1500 before butchering that beautiful Wunkay. The default nut width was originally 1.75", though many were ordered with the 1.5".

Well, I decided to get another L-2000 instead of the SB-2. I know, quite a difference! I had an L-2000, and like a dummy I sold it and had been jonesin' for another one, so I picked up a used Tribute. Should have it next week sometime. Looking forward to getting it and going over it w/ a fine tooth comb! It's a 3-tone sunburst, so it'll have a similar look to my JB-2, but w/ a rosewood fretboard instead of maple.

I think you're spot-on, although I really love the smaller body and simpler passive controls of the Kiloton.

Most L-1500s would have the thinner 6-bold L body and can be played passive, so at least would be comparable to your Wunkay.

Or you can always BTO a Kilo…
