Unless things have changed, G&L has never dyed their ebony boards. Ignore the color, look at the grain to know if it's ebony.

Just to muddy the waters a little, the early G&L "dark" wood boards were ebony, despite sometimes looking like rosewood at a glance. Then circa '82 they switched to rosewood as the default dark wood, but ebony was still available (sometimes without being requested). We have to look at the grain to know for sure. Never say never with CLF.

Several posts back, I asked about possibly wiring single coil mode on the underwound MFD humbuckers on the M-2x00 basses, and I got some good advice and ideas. I also emailed Memo at G&L on Sunday about this as I was looking at a couple Tribute M2000s on Reverb (and still am). Bright and early Monday morning, I received a response from him. Here it is: "The M2000 pickups are not wired to be splitable from the factory. These pickups are wired in series, If you wanted to do the series/single coil function you will need to reconfigure the wires on the pickup to do this."
So first, you'd have to wire the coils in parallel, because if not, shorting one coil to ground would cut off the other coil. So a switch set up for series / parallel / single coil would probably be needed. That's a lot more trouble than I think I'd want to go to, and maybe a notch or two above my pay grade as well.

I may have asked a few years ago but don't remember lol.
My U.S. L-2500 has ultralight tuners and wonder if anyone has found it helpful to replace their ultralights with Hipshot.
Also what size should I be looking at (1/2" or 3/8")? If it saves me at least 4ounces it would be worth it to me. Thanks for any help!

I still have the schematics with dual switches for the M-2x00 for series/single coil/parallel, courtesy of TorBass who was a forum member some 12 years ago. PM me if interested.Yep, I have a M-2500 that was modded with single coil switches for me by @RocketMusic before they shipped it to me. It has two 3-way switches added so I can change each pickup from inner/both/outer coils separately. With the blend knob and EQ the sound options are almost limitless!
My L-2500 is modded with the single coil option from G&L as well as an additional 2-way switch that enables med to switch between outer or inner coils too - also from Rocketmusic. This was 10+ years ago now and they are my forever-basses!
The picture below is inside TorBass's M-2500 Tribby.
Mytola's bass as described in his post is: inner coil/series/outer coil.

I will keep that in mind. If I go ahead and buy one of the Tribby M2000s I'm looking at on Reverb, it won't be for a few weeks as I'm moving to another state next week and will need time to complete that and get settled in. My L2500 is wired with individual push/ pull switches on the volume and treble pots for single coil, which works great. If I were to buy an M- and want to add single coil, I will let you know. Thanks again!

Taking my SB-2 and L2k to rehearsal tonight. I'm sure the SB-2 will fit better in some songs. First time I'll be trying it with the band.
Well, rehearsal was cancelled tonight and we won't be able to get back together for a few weeks due to other life priorities. I can tell you that our drummer will much prefer the SB-2 on anything we play. I'll use it for our country and blues songs and use the L2k for the harder rocking songs. Don't care what the drummer thinks. 
Further clarification. Our drummer would like the SB-2 using only the split coil PU with the tone rolled all the way off, and the treble, high-mids, and possibly low-mids on the amp also rolled all the way off. And an 18" speaker. And probably flat or tape wound strings. No color or harmonics whatso ever. Just thump that's felt and not heard. That's not me.

I've come close, but I will accommodate him to some extent. Just want to keep this band together without much drama. We've got gigs booked each month through the end of the year.
And throw a heavy wool blanket over that 18" while you're at it!
I've had several drummers who've bashed the hell out of their cymbals (16th notes!) who I would've loved to have been able to dial all the treble frequencies out of. I blame My tinnitus on them and overly loud electric guitarists. Of course I finally resorted to wearing hearing protection, but too little too late.

So it's now V/V/T with the coil tap for the MFD.

It sounds great.
I still have no real use for parallel on the MFD, but no big deal.
It's like having a new bass.
Combinations that do it for me:
Neck 100% with the MFD in single coil at about 50%.
Neck 100% with MFD in series at about 50%.
MFD in series at 100%, neck about 75%.
Also the neck pickup alone sounds great - the overwound is wooly but clear.
And then it's a plain ol kilo with the new pickup turned all the way down.
Love it! I have two Kilos, a USA and a Tribby, and I've been wanting to try that forever. Thanks for the inspiration!
