Yep... That painted neck sticks out big time
Are we supposed to be guessing? Actually, I see a couple ones that are unique to the others. For instance, there is only one with a maple fretboard. But the biggest difference I see is that the one on the left is a Schecter 8-string.
Well, since this is a G&L thread ... yes, that's what I was referring to. Regarding the maple fretboard, there's also one with an ebony fretboard, so that doesn't make the maple one entirely different from the others.

This arrived last Saturday after an ~8 month wait. Custom Shop L-2500 series 750! This bad boy was a gift from my SO and as close to my dream bass as I possess the faculties to describe.

- Quartersawn maple neck,
- Ebony fretboard with abalone dot inlays, & painted body-matched headstock.
- Single coil mode added
- CLF knobs, but no CLF-style control plate or headstock

The fretboard looks like the typical Caribbean rosewood, but the spec says ebony?
G&L website used to state the Caribbean rosewood they used, think they just mention rosewood after the website update.

The build sheet does indeed list Ebony for the fretboard. I agree that it's a bit lighter than I expected, but still has the very dense grain and surface texture I'd expect more from ebony. I am curious though, is there a way to reliably identify a lighter ebony sample compared to rosewood?

Long story short, about a year ago she caught me window-shopping on Sweetwater and asked me what my "dream bass" would be. I had recently asked my sweetwater representative for a copy of the G&L BTO form and saved a copy on my computer that I had filled out (I wanted a reference on pricing, but was a long way off from ordering) and brought that up in the conversation. That file apparently got copied one day while I was at work and ordered, much sooner than I had ever expected to...
I replaced the Caribbean rosewood board with an ebony board. Notice the Caribbean rosewood board looks abit smudgy. Could be my misconception.
G&L Ebony isn't always a uniform black, these are both recent-ish examples:
Uniformly black ebony is pretty rare anymore unless it's been dyed black. They used to burn the lighter parts of the wood, but it's structurally the same and companies like Taylor started using the lighter wood to "save the trees". It really became a thing and now most all the ebony you see has lighter streaks in it.
As far as being able to tell, ebony is has a much denser grain pattern than rosewood, meaning there's more open grain in rosewood. Ebony feels smoother because of the closed grain. It can polish up almost like it's been finished.

Pretty sure someone here has done that at some point. I do recall seeing an M with some added switches.
Any dual coil pickup should be splittable. It just depends on how invasive you're willing to get. If the pickup has 4 leads coming from it, it should be pretty straightforward. If not, if it has only 2, the two coils would be joined by a small jumper wire. You'd just need to remove that wire and replace it with two longer wires, each one attached at a different one of the points where the jumper wire was attached.
But hopefully they're already wired with 4 leads.
Yep, I have a M-2500 that was modded with single coil switches for me by @RocketMusic before they shipped it to me. It has two 3-way switches added so I can change each pickup from inner/both/outer coils separately. With the blend knob and EQ the sound options are almost limitless!
My L-2500 is modded with the single coil option from G&L as well as an additional 2-way switch that enables med to switch between outer or inner coils too - also from Rocketmusic. This was 10+ years ago now and they are my forever-basses!

Thanks @TDR1138 and @Mytola. I guess I should have been more specific, but access to the wires is what I was really wondering about, and you both answered that question for me. I just sold my Tribute MJ-4, for which I received an offer I couldn't refuse. I'm looking at replacing it with an M-2000 and was wondering if it could be modded in that way. I have my Tribute L-2500 modded with a push / pull switch on the volume and on the treble so I can individually swap either pickup (or both) into single coil, but that M-series preamp and wiring is a different animal.
I had a M-2500 and never felt the need to check or fool with it. It was quite pleasant, if not a bit underwhelming. The thought of going from stock series to a weaker parallel or single coil just didn't seem appealing to me.
But I wholeheartedly support the pro-modding stances of "it's your bass" and "go for it."
