Wish he had convinced them to make it with an extra fret, wider nut, and 6-bolt neck. Ah, but, I'd still prefer my jb2.
Thought about getting a set of the mfd jb pickups for it, because my stock pickups are really low in output. But for some reason, they sound and record great.

I sort of get what you're saying, I ordered my L2K with the JB neck.

I got a new M2000 from G&L at the end of February. BTO. Never been touched by anyone than me.

This morning, it went dead. I opened it up, batteries were already dead. They are using Member's Mark 9V batteries, clearly rubbish.

I never leave it plugged in either, so it got drained just through playing.

The purpose of this post is not to slam G&L, but to let you know that you may want to change batteries soon after you take possession of your new G&L M2000, because as we all know, there's no passive option, so when the batteries go dead...that's it.

Might be worth checking wiring. I had this happen once and found a small short at the battery leads that was causing drainage (not on a G&L but could happen on anything).

Change out 9v batteries = check

Send Dave McClaren email telling him not to be so damn cheap = check (enclose receipt for new batteries)

If you don't want to deal with G&L warranty repair, check the barrel jack for an internal short causing a slow vampire leak. Even without being plugged in it will drain batteries. Bad jack?...install new one, bill G&L for it. Good luck.

Thx for all these ideas, I would have never thought of all that.

I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff. I put in new batteries. If they drain quick I'll bring it in to the luthier.

Interesting...As you know I picked up a M in Dec and then 2 more this winter...I will keep an eye on on the battery life. I have not noticed anything yet and these basses are getting played daily. I'm going to measure the voltage and see what the drop is.

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. I have a bass I built with a Nordstrand MM4.2 (3 screw tabs) about 16 years ago that I love, but I'm considering swapping in an M-series MFD, moving it slightly back toward the bridge, and then putting in a P pickup in the P-bass location.

Odd as it sounds, I'd probably put the P pickup on it's own Vol/tone and the MFD on it's own vol/preamp circuit with a 3-way switch to select between sources. The chassis is one of the best I've ever had, so it will handle any pickup and string combo I give it. It's been a fantastic MM-style "Pino" bass, but I think it can do more.

It's just an idea at the moment.

I want these pickups so badly. Really, I want a bicoil or otherwise hum canceling variation of these. I want them in every one of my basses!

I actually E-mailed G&L about ordering just the pups -- 6 pairs -- and if they were planning on a hum bucking model. No response.

That's typical of them with me. I got one message back, maybe two, from them then ever since they've been ignoring me. I guess what I'm asking is always too out of scope for what they do? No idea, really.

When I asked them for the bicoil jazz pups that I've got in my MJ4, they told me to ask someone else and something about how they don't support having their hardware in other manufacturer's instruments.

As if nobody ever bought something from their shoppe and used it with something else. Hey, it's still a G&L logo even if i.e. Schecter made the bass! They should make 6-7 string, 8 & 12 string multicourse, and (semi-hollow) basses with piezos then!

Actually, slightly off topic now, maybe. A few weeks ago I filled out the online forum thing with Dylan Talks Tone asking him if he could make me afforementioned bicoils. I haven't hears back but, I'm not sure the message actually went through.

G&L seems to be not so good on the communication front. I was interested in maybe trying out some bicoils in my JB2 since I like them in my MJ4. There are a number of bicoil designs out there, but I'm not sure if any are close to the MJ4 pickups.

These guys are in business to sell instruments, they are not a parts company per say. The don't have a support staff answering emails random and perhaps some would deem "frivolous" in nature.

Imagine if you were supporting your family in this economy, trying to make your mortgage on the next PO on selling a commodity item....
As Ozzyman would sah....:"Yeahhh Nahhhh..."

I'm being dead serious, give some thought to that. I'm not writing to this to piss anyone off, but I know these people and they have their priorities in line.

I have never had an issue contacting them. I even got time to interview Dave for a project in college (scheduled it within a day or so of me reaching out). I also have never reached out for some of the fringe cases you are getting at. My needs have been....

- Hey can I interview Dave for a project? - Seems like I reached out on via G&LDP back then.
- Warranty repair request; Tech at authorized G&L dealer contacted them to let them know the issue and validate my request before I had called.
- Status of warranty repair request.
- Info request on my G&L L5000; This one they did not have to reply to, but Memo was quick to respond.

Plus, I don't think they're the biggest company in the world. It's really great that given their size they have that build to order program.

As an aside, I also have never had an issue communicating with them.

They are wonderful people tried and true

So we can calibrate this unctuous acclaim, please can you tell us:
1. How many of their basses you have
2. How much you paid for them
3. How long you waited for them
4. How many of them came incorrectly specced
5. How many of them had subpar necks

From my perspective, one that involved a lot of money, and even more time, they're a bunch of shysters whose behaviour upwards is very different to their behaviour downwards. I deeply regret being so foolish as to let my head be turned by them five years ago. Nice paint, though.
