Honestly, I am just looking for a familiar sounding 5 string bass that is passive and which has narrow spacing. I understand going ahead with what G&L is known for, but any particular reason you feel I should stay away from the JB5? I just feel that the JB platform is something I'm at least kind of familiar with and hence, am more inclined to go with that over the Kiloton. Now, if there's a choice of pickups on the JB5 itself, that's something I have missed! If yes, please do educate me on this!
Congrats! Awesome lookin bass, love that finish. The thing about the volume control with these hot pickups, IME and as you may be discovering, it's not just the "loud" the vol knob affects - it changes the character of the bass in a subtle way to roll it back vs dime it. Full-on it's the MFD monster G&Ls are known for. Start rolling it back and it tames the aggressiveness and gets you into a more expected passive-Fendery zone. I found that to be the case on my now gone L2500s even though it took me a while to realize it. With my current Kiloton V I have it usually set about 80%, but I have dimed it for that sound at times. Just another reason why these basses are so versatile!NBD bling! (Decided not to wait for BTO).

This thing is LOUD. Learned quickly I'm supposed to play at %75 volume.
Chiming in here, as I say, I have both. Both are excellent. You just have to decide if you want a five string Jazz which you're familiar with, or a five string that leans kinda sorta in the 'Ray direction sonically. No reason to stay away from a JB-5 if you wanna go J, I think it's one of the best passive J fivers out there. Maybe they'll release a fiver version of the new JB MFD pickups--that would be something I'd be curious to check out, but for now there's just the regular ones available. If you don't want to modify the bass, get the Kiloton.
If you are willing to mod the bass, then you can find jazz bass pickups for a wide spectrum of sounds/styles.
If you have never had an MFD equipped G&L, then you should do the Kiloton.
I agree with @ahadl2500. The Kiloton is the way to go. For a single pickup bass it has a wide variety of tones available and will give you variety with the LB-100 .
Id say a jb with pedals can do anything, but a Kilo alone can do most anything.
Just a note to add to my other note. A "set" of Jazz Bass pickups will not work in a Tribute JB-2. Unlike a regular jazz bass, both of the Tribute JB-2's Cort pickups are the same length, so you'd have to buy either two neck pickups or two bridge pickups (I don't remember which
, but doing that costs a little more). On my Tribute JB-2, I made it active and installed a 2-band active preamp because I found the pickups rather bland. On my Tribute Kiloton, I did nothing. With the USA-built MFD pickup, it sounds outrageously good.

Hey man, the JB2 is going to feel and sound like any Jazz bass. The Kiloton is its own thing.
I had one in my possession and found it was not for me. It's very close to a Stingray but a little more mids with some switching options.
I think you are better off with L2000. Your close by if want to check out a L or M just ping me.

Same here. I always (well, 99% of the time) use mine in series, passive mode. I have the volume up full, but my bass is cut to around 20-30% because series mode pumps up A LOT of low end. I keep the treble at 90% and I get a fantastic rounded tone this way. For parallel setting, I can easily keep eq at full or around 90% with volume full on. It's still a strong signal, but nothing unwieldy. Plays great will all of my pedals.

Stoked for you that the Kiloton works for you. Just for the record, you can do a "build to order", (not custom shop) for a reasonable price with them and still get plenty of options.
Everything they call the "Boston Package" lol is available that way.

A) A Kiloton will sound far different than either a Jazz Bass or a PBass. They're very mid forward and does great if you need a bass that really cuts through a loud rock mix. A JBass may be more versatile though.
B) I would definitely suggest exploring a 2000 Series G&L. I've had two Jazz Basses to contrast my M2000 to and it's always been the M2000 I kept. It's just so much more versatile.

My M series basses are my daily drivers so to speak for pop. I slide in the L series in for here and there stuff. I actually normally cut my mids and dial them in for whatever the mix is without increasing gain of any kind but EQ.
Anyone see the rumors swirling around G&L in the past day or so? Supposedly there are some things on Facebook (I am not on there so I would not know). I saw a post on the G&L Discussion Page that said...
"The entire factory was furloughed on Monday with no real explanation. Several employees, including myself, hadn't received pay in weeks. Supposedly we're reopening on the 29th, but there has been zero communication from the McLarens as to what is going on.
We're just as in the dark as all of you on the outside are."
Not trying to spread rumors or speculation with this. Please take the above as rumor (it is given the source is just a forum post and I have no direct knowledge). Mainly wondering if anyone here with better connections to G&L knows anything, since I know there are a few reasonably reliable/well connected G&L sources on the forum.
