G&L Club Part 7

Interesting I didnt know they teased a new L5000. I bet it would be popular. There would be complaints that an aftermarket pickup won't fit, but a refreshed L5000 would not be for those people.

I suppose I should say the teased a 5 string P bass (and most, including me, assumed it would be MFD equipped). Never happened. Closest we got was the 5 string Double P.

I have a hard time counting a custom shop only instrument as being what they were hinting at. They could have done a 5 string LB with a readily available pickup (instead of a 5 string MFD) and it would have been closer to what I expected than what we got.

The 5-string double P with the L2500 750 chassis was interesting, but it makes a lot of sense as the starting point. Modifying an LB body to accommodate a 750 5-string neck takes a lot of tooling changes. Yes, CNC makes the actual fabrication easier, but it doesn't address the design time. While I'd love to see an MFD Split 5-string pickup, I'd probably be pretty happy with the 750 chassis in place of the more traditional LB chassis modified for 5 strings.

I prefer the slimmer body and standard G&L spacing. A P pickup in a 5 string Kilo would be more of what I want. Preferably an MFD P.

Oddly (or maybe not), I love the 17mm spacing on my fretless L2500. I have a Muckelroy 5 w/18mm that is also just about perfect. But when I play my son's fretted L2500, I'm reminded that I prefer wider spacing on my fretted 5s. However, I'm not at all bothered by 18mm on a fretted bass, so maybe that's a happy compromise. But if I was to get another G&L fretted 5, I'd mostly be looking at an L2500 750.

Then again, the M2500 does interest me a lot and I know I can play 17mm fretted basses just fine. The oddity to me is that I like the narrower spacing on fretless and wider on fretted.

I think the main reason I did not like the 750 as well when I tried it is that I had been playing a regular L2500 for a long time before I tried one and it just felt slightly bulkier (because it is). In general I have not been overly sensitive to string spacing over the years. Currently own and regularly play basses ranging from 14mm to 19mm spacing. Feeling slightly different from what I was comfortable with made it strange for me (may have been more comfortable if the differences were more extreme).

I frequently have this thought with some of their custom shop stuff. Seems like there could be an opportunity for small batch special editions. Downside is that when they have done these so far, many have been expensive CS pieces. Something between CS and Fullerton pricing with new pickup/body combinations relative to the Fullerton line would be neat to see (though may or may not market well).

That would be cool. For example, one could envision a Kiloton with an MFD J pickup toward the neck.

I've seen something like this on the guitar side, with a batch of metal flake, slab-bodied Comanche guitars at the Manhattan GC. It's a GC exclusive, and it appears they might be limited to GC locations with a "Platinum" collection room, which would explain why I haven't seen them in the Philly metro GC locations. Nothing different about the electronics, but definitely unusual, especially the slab bodies with binding. On GC's web site, they call it a "limited edition."

That'd be my question. I am not sure how many people would line up for a P/MFD bass.
 
Sure. Just pointing out that the bridge comes with two screws and they ain't there. Probably because someone top loaded, the bridge ripped clean off the body, and now the screws won't stay. :laugh:
I wouldn't be put off by that if it was priced accordingly. A couple strings through the body provides plenty of down-force and the block under the bridge provides all the positional stability you could want. It would also be easy enough to remedy with machine screws through the string ferules.
