G&L Club Part 7

Anyone know when they started putting two strap buttons on the bridge side of the body? Someone made a comment about mine having one and it possibly being older than '95 because of this.

My ASAT B5 (5 string) had a single strap button in the same middle of bridge location. I preferred that location to the dual-button ASAT's (I had nine other ones over the years, all dual-button). The B5 was from '98. Still have my 2000 ASAT semi-hollow.

About six months ago, it seemed like a lot of members here were clamoring for the JB MFD model to become a reality. Of course, now it has. Sweetwater has three different ones available...a natural, a silver metallic, and a fiesta red. G&L has two of them listed in the B-stock category of their store, a natural and a silver metallic. The prices at the G&L store are fair, and if the 20% discount is still in effect, then they're downright great. Unfortunately, though I'd like to buy one, my finances are on a downturn right now, and I already have a roomful of basses. But I'm amazed that these basses are sticking around. It seemed like a lot of us were clamoring for these basses, but few are buying. Or maybe it was just a few clamoring really loudly, so it seemed like many were. (Clamoring can get confusing.) :hyper: Does anyone know for certain if that 20% discount is still in effect? The last email I got about it was six days ago, and I didn't see any date mentioned for its ending.

I have a Tribute series JB and I'm eyeballing an Audere preamp to drop in it. I know the pre-amp and battery are supposed to fit into a passive Fender J bass, but I'm wondering if there's any difference in the cavity size of the G&L that could be an issue.

Also, are control plates interchangeable between G&L and Fender? I see Audere has two different models, and one has a toggle switch. I was looking to get that one, but if I have to use the OEM plate, I'd get the toggle-less version.

I put a John East J-Tone pre in my Fullerton JB. Love it. Everything fit just fine.

I think it's a great idea. I also wish they'd bring back the MJ-4, which was essentially the active version of the JB-2. It used the M preamp and had noiseless jazz-style pickups in it instead of regular single coils. In other words, if the JB-2 and the M-2000 had a baby, it would be the MJ 4. I had a Tribute version MJ-4 but sold it when a friend made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I still remember the day I unpacked that bass and plugged it in. It was an amazing bass. Even with the Cort noiseless Jazz pickups in it, it sounded fantastic...big and rich and articulate. I am not a fan of Cort's Alnico pickups, but these were fine. My only complaint was that the blend pot acted more like a switch. There was maybe a 1/8" area of the sweep that actually had some blend capability. The rest of the sweep was just there. Fortunately, with the blend pot at center detent, it sounded wonderful. My guess is that G&L might build me one as a Custom Shop bass, but that's just a dream for when I win the lottery. (Somebody feed me some numbers! :hyper:)

I frequently have this thought with some of their custom shop stuff. Seems like there could be an opportunity for small batch special editions. Downside is that when they have done these so far, many have been expensive CS pieces. Something between CS and Fullerton pricing with new pickup/body combinations relative to the Fullerton line would be neat to see (though may or may not market well).
