I wouldn't re-fin, but that's just me...
Here's my 1980. It had never been cleaned, had decades of bar smoke in the finish (stank!), and the leather strap had sunk into the finish while it sat in the case, unused.
Several grades of Meguire's swirl remover, cleaner and polish, and a couple hours of work later:

There was one that was beat WAY more than this one. It sold, not too long ago, for better than $500.00. It was a mahogany model. That one looked like it had been tortured.

Quick question. When did G&L change the headstock design? I found an SB-1 (From what I could make out in the picture) on my local CL. Guy wants $400 trying to determine its age and if it is a good buy or not. Your guys input would be appreciated.

Thanks. I wasn't sure. It looked like a Tribby but that didn't quite make sense. I might have to try to trade my Squier II for this one.
They never made an SB-1 Tribute model, although they're just now reissuing a US-made version, so I suppose anything's possible. It would sort of make sense to issue a Tribute SB-1 to compliment the SB-2.
The 2nd generation SB-1 (w/ the P-style pup like the one listed) didn't appear until '85 and the MFD pickup (again, as shown) didn't appear until about a year later. This one appears to have an older style (original) case, so my bet would be it dates to the late 80s.

Sign me up for the G & L Club. I picked up both of these beauties from TBers. Both are MIA and are lefties as you can see - who says you can't find a good used G & L? The L 2500 is almost new. It has a great variety of tones and is easy to play. I haven't played a lot of 5 strings but this one feels comfy. The other one is a 1983 SB-2 just got it today. Wow what a tone, and the neck feels great. To avoid a bad case of GAS I sold my other 2 basses to help pay for these. I'm not looking back - hooked on G & L. I really think both of these make me sound better than my skill level should allow. For the experts, a question: the '83 SB 2, what wood is the body likely to be? The guy I got it from said it might be maple; does that sound right? The neck is one sold piece of maple - no glued on fretboard. Doesn't seem to have any neck problems though. Love 'em both! Don't think I need any other basses, though I did see a nice L 2000 lefty recently.

Thanks Chef. How about the 1 piece neck (no separate fretboard)? Was that a common design for early SB -2s or other early G & Ls?
