Six bolt, no neck plate. Either the serial number plate was removed, or the serial number itself was removed. Here is a close up of the spot. Is this the only location for the number?

I cannot see your picture. But it's sure, it was removed.

Printed aluminum number plates - with 2 screws and CLFxxxxxx numbers - started in something like 2011 or 2012...

Thanks Glazenn! It sure appears to me to be a decal that was removed, which could put it as a 1997 or 1998. Sure tough to tell. The thought of no serial number is a deal breaker for me.

That's where the tone worm lives. Without it, your bass will have exactly zero mojo.

Strange they don't just use the tuner post holes to hang the bass for for spraying like everybody else.

Now a bigger problem, looks like the serial number plate is gone. You can see where it's faded around where the plate used to be. Bummer... View attachment 695590

The tuners are fine. That bass was made before G&L went to the serial number "plates".

That faded area is where the "CLFXXXXX" number should be.

Someone removed the serial number. That aint good.

Here's an L-1500 from 2002. It has a 6-bolt neck.

I think it's actually a maple plug in the hole where they hang it for spraying, looks like you are seeing the end grain of the plug. My old 83' L2000 does not have this.

That dot goes back to the dawn of G&L production. Here it is on my 81 L-2000 with the old Fender style headstock.

I think originally the dot was to fill a hole that was used to anchor a router or jig used to shape the headstock - pre CNC days.

Yep. From what I understand, it's where they peg the neck to spray the finish lacquer on it.

This is correct. All necks have (or should have) this and it's the spot where they hang it for drying.

... Now, why they don't move that one inch over and put it under the serial number plate (for newer ones) is just beyond me.

My 2014 G&L JB has the dot as well. And the serial number is on a nice little plate screwed into the wood.

If a recent thread is any indication, you will be sent straight to the hottest corner of hell if you buy a bass with a removed serial number. In fact, according to many in that thread, it is illegal to buy, sell, or own any object with a removed serial number. And, they also asserted that if it was removed, it most certainly was stolen at some point so you will be sent to the hottest spot in the hottest corner of hell if you buy it.

I didn't buy into to that crap, but the vast majority of posters in that thread thought I was the devil himself because I would have bought the bass in question.

So gird your loins OP. If word gets out you'll be right in the hot seat with me.

Does the back of all G&L headstock's have the small dot in the middle? This is the back of an L-1500. Does this look right?

Does anyone else here think this headstock looks funny? Idk, but I own 2 g&L's and am an avid fan- it just looks wrong to me. Someone school me if it is indeed legit

Yeah I followed that thread too. My hesitation with this bass is that I am looking at it online and only seeing pics. They want $600 for it. There are cracks in the finish and they don't know what year is was made... so I am gonna pass.
