G&L Ideas

The problem I see with G&L is that it kinda is Fender and kinda isn't. You'll have to do some brand education with local customers, and it can be a hard sell for someone to pay more for a "non-Fender" that isn't "boutique." Kind of neither fish nor fowl - so I'm not sure how that market position really works. My sense is that the low and high end get attention right now, and the middle is tough, especially with offshored stuff like Skyline that looks like the US-made stuff at a middle price point.

I agree that you probably need to get a critical mass of instruments in the door to show that you believe in the brand. Tough one though - would be good if one or two were "pre sold" to give some momentum but maybe that doesn't matter. I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

Yep, you nailed it...

I think G&L does have a fairly faithful following, perhaps not as active on TB as other places. I have sold a pretty good many over the years, I just never got into the groove with them with an order pipeline and the whole bit. I figure I might as well give it a shot? They're fine basses that I can sell with a straight face and stand behind, and that's really all I ask of any brand.

Never really understood the resistance myself. The build qualify is top notch as are the electronics. Maybe it's because it was Leo's last company and never had a chance to fully market his instruments to the mass market.

And Greg, you need an affordable line. Not all of us can afford those elitist instruments you carry :bawl:

So Greg are you going to stay away from the Tributes?

In a word... yes.

The tributes ceased to be a "bargain" with the last price increase (this was like 1.5-2 years ago). I think they're supposed to sell for $699 and 799 now. So it doesn't really scratch the mexi-Fender itch, AND an equivalent G&L USA model is just a few hundred above that... they basically became a tough sell due to the price. Plus all the other baggage that comes with import lines depending on your way thinking...

Heres my vote:

MODEL: L-2000 ($1700)
FINISH: Blonde Nitro over Ash
OPTIONS: K-Wiring (N/C)
FRETBOARD: Maple GOT!
NECK: #6

Questions:
What does the nitro paint option cost? What is K-wiring? What would be the cost for the above bass?

Thanks!

Yep, Fred's right. The nitro finishes are only available on the "Rustic" models. There is a "Rustic" L2K, though, so I'll quote you both ways.

MODEL: L-2000 "Rustic" ($3133)
FINISH: Blonde Nitro over Ash (N/C)
OPTIONS: K-Wiring (N/C)
FRETBOARD: Maple GOT!
NECK: #6 ($50)
TOTAL RETAIL: $3183
STREET: $2389

MODEL: L-2000 ($1700)
FINISH: Blonde Poly over Ash ($100)
OPTIONS: K-Wiring (N/C)
FRETBOARD: Maple GOT!
NECK: #6 ($50)
TOTAL RETAIL: $1850
STREET: $1389

So the nitro basically costs ya $1K... given the level of regulation in the state of CA and the toxic nature of nitro, I'm sadly not surprised.

Wow! Thats quite a big difference! Maybe they should export their "rustics" to Mexico like some other company?

Thanks for the info.

One more dumb question:
The K-wiring (I assume this is changing the series-parallel to series-parallel-single coil) is done at G&L? I dont see this in their list of options.

MODEL: SB2
FINISH: Clear Forest Green
Pickguard:Pearloid. Maybe brown tort
FRETBOARD: RW
NECK: #8

Man, I love green instruments... but they are a tough sell. I think lots of folks like the idea of a green instrument, but they can't quite pull the trigger on one. Still, let's price 'er on out!

MODEL: SB2 ($1500)

FRETBOARD: RW (N/C)

Speaking of Tributes a few posts back... I've got several left in stock that I'm going to treat like my remaining Warwicks. Blow 'em out to find them a home, and put whatever meager proceeds into "the next big thing". :D

Here's what I've got left:
TRIBUTES-LEFT.jpg

1 x Tribute L2K Nat/RW
1 x Tribute L2K Nat/MP
1 x Tribute L2K Nat/RW Lefty

I'm asking $475 shipped for each of these. And as with the Warwicks: I'm losing $$ at these prices, so I'm not interested in trades or haggling. Thanks in advance for your interest!
