G & L JB-2 or Carvin B40?

As far as the size of the pickups, all Carvin pups are the same length, which is the same as the length of the bridge pickups on a standard Fender. That means that a neck pickups from a third party vendor like DiMarzio will be a little shorter than the Carvins.

LOL, I agree man. I can hardly tell what colors are on my pickups either. As long as it sounds good to you, don't worry about it would be my advice.

I got a Carvin bass without a reverse wound pickup in it. You can take the strings off, loosen the pickup screws and gently slip it out and look at what's written on the bottom to help if needed.

LOL, seems to me Yellow and Black would have been a much better color coding system. Can't go wrong in seeing a distiction with Yellow and Black, lol.

Yeah, they sound pretty good. But they seem a little weak. Of course this is a passive electrionics system, so I don't expect the same output of an Active system. I prefer passive systems. But I expected more from the J99A pickups. Maybe it's just too soon to tell. Maybe I'm right and they are the H50A. Maybe I'm wrong. Regardless, I love the bass itself and that's what's more important. The pickups and electronics can always be modified/changed. I'll give whichever these pickups are a chance for a few days. I'll know more when I play with the band and see how it cuts in the mix.

Meanwhile, I think I'll look into buying DiMarzio DP123 Model J Bass Pickup set, so that I have them on hand should I decide to change.

Shorter is much more workable than if they were larger.

I've had my eye on the DiMarzio DP123 Model J Bass Pickup Set. Wouldn't mind installing them in this bass. problem is, I read some where that only the bridge DP123 would fit in the cavity. Not the neck puckup. Do you know if that's true? Even if it's true, I imagine there has to be a way to work it to fit in the neck position, also. What do you think?

both pickup positions on a carvin are "bridge" pickup dimentions on a regular J set, so when you order any replacements, you need to order 2 bridge pickups, the only difference is the size. i have this in one of my carvins and it sounds great

i should mention that both basses, the one with dimarzios and the one with the single coils, sound better in passive mode to me. i have a gerry rigged external passive tone control that i use since carvin doenst (or didnt) have that option

I've been fiddling around and experimenting with my head's settings. The more I adjust the tone knobs on the amp and bass, the nicer tones I discover. I am liking these pickups.

So for the time being, I'll keep these pickups in place and experiment more with them on my own and when playing with the band. Maybe I'll eventually end up installing the DiMarzio DP123 Model J, in this B40.

Or maybe, some time down the road I'll get myself another B40 and install the DiMarzio DP123 Model J

if you have the single coils id just leave them. as i said, i replaced the carvin humbuckers in one bass, but left the single in the other because they sound great
