G & L JB-2 or Carvin B40?

seriously, this guy was a big deciding factor in me ordering my SB5000. anyone who loves G&L and a Carvin is one of their favorite basses knows how well built a bass should be!

the same can be said for G&L. i sold mine and there are many other people who have not been happy with them. i love both G&L and Carvin. For some reason, both get bad remarks on this board.

i don't have the sb5000 yet. it will be finished June 28th and I will have it shortly after. to say i'm excited is an understatement.
I have a Carvin B40 on the way (should be here today or tomorrow), so I'll know soon enough how it feels/plays.
The G&L are wonderful instruments. Love them!
I have a Carvin SH60 six string guitar and it's friggin' great! If the B40 is as good, I'll be a happy camper.
Both G&L and Carvin make some sweet, high quality instruments. Try to audition both (if you can) and find out what you prefer and like best.

She (B40) came in yesterday
She's beautiful.
By the end of the night I had spent rougly four hours playing her. I love the neck...action....sweeet. Playability is so nice. I love it. It's basically a P-Bass body with Jazz pickups and the body of this bass is so comfortable. Very nice.
But, I think they installed the wrong pickups. I think they installed the H50A instead of the JJ9A. So I'll be on the phone with Carvin about it......over the next few days. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this B40.
It's a Cherry Burst color with a Satin/Matte finish. None of these pictures truely capture the beauty of the finish and the true cherry to burst transition of the color. Wish I was a better photographer.

Did you order Hum canceling? Also, who made your TR cover?
carvin and throw in some dimarzio's for $90 if you dont like the stock pickups for some reason, although, i have the carvin single coils and really like them. i did swap out the carvin humbuckers in another bass though. the singles are staying.
I ordered the J99A Single Coil pickups, with Cream pickup covers. As far as I know the J99A are not humcanceling. When I initially ordered this bass, the Rep e-mailed me a copy of the order. I immediately saw that he had entered "Item # 409 Cream H50A Pickups".
So I called him back and pointed out that I wanted the JJ9A pickups with the Cream covers. He said that he had to enter it as "Item # 409 Cream H50A Pickups" because it was the only way to designate J99A with Cream Pickups and that the guys/builders would know exactly what it meant. I was not exactly convinced that would be the case. Seems like a situation that would lead to a mistake. So I did a little hunting around on their parts page and I found " J99A-2 " which is the J99A with Cream covers. So once again called him back and politely pointed that out to him. He insisted that he had done it correctly. So I left it at that. Now, I'm not convinced these are the J99A with Cream covers. I'll speak with them soon.

Mike is a great guy and I've had several of these truss rod covers made for me, as well as several other things. Beautiful work.
I've had my eye on the DiMarzio DP123 Model J Bass Pickup Set. Wouldn't mind installing them in this bass. problem is, I read some where that only the bridge DP123 would fit in the cavity. Not the neck puckup. Do you know if that's true? Even if it's true, I imagine there has to be a way to work it to fit in the neck position, also. What do you think?
not sure why only the bridge would work. carvin's pickups are the same size i believe and so are the dimarzio's. you just need to see if the two sizes match up.
What color is the dot on the pickup covers?

I've owned two Carvins and been very impressed. Their build quality far exceeds their price point. The woods and workmanship are excellent, and the playability and intonation are right up there with instruments costing twice as much.

The dots look Red to me. But some shades of Red and Brown can be a problem for me (a little color blindness); so I'll wait till the wife gets home and ask her to look at the dots.

I'll tell you one thing, Carvin couldn't have picked a worse color coding system for their pickups, lol
Considering a large percentage of males have some kind of color blindness (difficutly in seeing difference in certain shades of color) and a large percentage of the difficulties are in the deeper shades of Red and Brown.

LOL, I agree man. I can hardly tell what colors are on my pickups either. As long as it sounds good to you, don't worry about it would be my advice.
I got a Carvin bass without a reverse wound pickup in it. You can take the strings off, loosen the pickup screws and gently slip it out and look at what's written on the bottom to help if needed.
