Thanks for the clarification Chef. So omg mode (yes its oh my god because when you hit it you go oh my god!) is single coil with bass boost. Thats what I always thought but have read a few differing versions of what it is. Any idea which coil side is used in single mode?

Regarding the sound of omg mode, I agree its as treble capable as other settings but to me it is a bit murky. Sort of like the difference between series and parallel on a typical L2000. To me it sounds like there are less overtones than the other two settings and thats why I prefer them. Ymmv.

Probably Ken Baker or Tris could give you a big complicated technical overview of how OMG works.
There are schematics on the G&L faq somewhere, but I believe they may not be quite 100% accurate, either of them.

You can, at low volume, plug you bass in, and take a paper clip or screwdriver, and tap the coiuls to see which side is which.

Found this pic in a thread about the L-1000 here on TB.

I've never seen one in person, but my guess is that the pickup is more in the forward position than in the sweet spot.

Yes, Chef, it was CAR, with a weird "orange peel" in the finish. Still sounded good...

Thanks. That's actually a pre-production bass, dated just prior to July 1980, the official production start. I contacted Dale Hyatt about it, and he had no record of the serial number, and suggested that Leo could have used it for "field testing".....
